What I've noticed since going back to college is that 18-21 year old kids have almost no skills whatsoever. Sure they are good at school, but nothing practical. In some of my group projects at LSU, I'd purposely suggest shite that I knew wouldn't work just to see if they'd notice it. None of them ever did. I sat in on some senior engineering presentations and almost laughed at the obvious shite the kids couldn't see. Hell, on one group's project, the professors didn't even see a glaringly obvious thing that took me a split second to notice. My take from that is it is lack of life/work experience.
I switched to UNO, where the average sophomore/junior age is probably 26, and can have actual competent discussions with some people.
Working at a snowball stand or carwash for the summer before college doesn't prepare you for a damn thing, and they don't realize that.

I hired my most recent aTm kid who was painting houses while interviewing and waiting for a job. Humble, smart, hard-working and the attributes go on and on. The white kids I interviewed were worthless.

All of the engineering interns we've hired over the last 8 years or so have been exceptional. Smart, common sense, not hung up on social media, etc...
That gives me some hope for the future.

The irony is Baby Boomers saying Millenials are worthless and unskilled then 10 minutes later ask one of us how to back up their phone contacts, send attachments in emails, and how to respond to craigslist ads with no phone number listed.

I find most people to be dumb, slow and incompetent. That's why very few rise to the top, most people are destined to be worker ants. It doesn't matter what age or generation they come from.

I'm a 29 year old business owner. I can only speak for myself here and the experiences I've had with the folks I work with and have worked with since I began my professional career. But I've found that, generally speaking, the smartest, hungriest, best problem solvers I've come across in my field come from my generation and the generation ahead of mine (Generation X, I guess). They are much more tech savvy, more outgoing and hungrier. They're older counterparts can't keep up. It's not close. The men and women that work for me range in age from about 25 to 55. We work in the oil & gas industry. frick your study.

To the OP: Meh, but not to be too alarmed (yet)...
I was born in '66 and graduated from LSU in '88... I've seen through the years and through different forms of media, the constant battle that exists between older generations and younger.. I mean, for one example, Rock n Roll in the '50's was evil to the old timers back then and would lead to ruin...... Today, there are many things "Millennials" are good at that those of us that are older are not, especially tech savvy things that don't require a lot of effort on their part..... HOWEVER, I do acknowledge that amongst a lot of younger millennials the lack of practical skills such as the ability to change a flat tire, or to find a stud in the wall, or to drive a stick shift has increased dramatically...
I don't think it's any sort of decline but just a natural progression of the world as technology continues to evolve. In the end, there will still always be the ditch diggers, the blue collars, the white collars, the corporate executives, and the entrepreneurs....I do believe, however, that if we cut back the entitlement mentality that exists today from the federal government on down to the local elected officials, that a huge increase in common sense and practical problem solving skills will re-evolve amongst all generations....

65 year olds are not as hungry and tech savvy as 30 year olds? Go figure.
That's not the point of the study. The point of the study is that if you ask a 25 year old today how to change his oil, or how to weld, or how to change an outlet they probably would have no clue. Ask a 65 year old the same thing and they could likely do it with ease.

Meh, that's not really the point of it either. I would not expect anyone, of any age, who is not a welder by trade to know how to weld.
It's more about literacy, math skills, and common sense problem solving in applied situations. The results do not surprise me.
