Its hard but it works, we had twins and when they both get going...well you can imagine.

The hard headed one (he is still that way) would cry so long and so hard he would make himself sick, but he eventually figured it out.

Not really applicable when they're helpless infants, but ok.

Anything to not look into the mirror. Not saying its you specifically, but GD there are a lot of people putting way too much thought into sh!t like this.

You'll learn with your kids what cries are significant and which ones are simply for attention and fake. They're smarter than you give them credit, but you'll see that when you have your own.

Oh it was obvious when they were in distress versus I'm pissed off and dont want to go to bed.

And the intervals work, you go in and comfort them, get them calm and put them back down.

I don't follow. The well being of your child is kind of an important thing.

Exactly. It takes some work but it generally works.

News flash: raising an infant is hard work, and you're going to lose sleep. Just comes with it. There's no sure fire method for all babies. Some sleep, some don't. What that article didn't mention was the age groups they were studying and the fact that infants feed in the middle of the night. So much grey area here.

Crying it out because of ear ache, teething, gas, fever is not okay imo

I do admit sometimes it can be difficult on rare occasions. Like a few weeks ago, he was being a little sh*t for like two hours. We went in his room multiple times. Then finally we said it was time to let him cry a little longer since as soon as went in the room he'd shut up and be fine. No signs of distress as long as we were there. He went in and out of crying for the next 45 minutes. Not straight, but cry for 5, sleep for 10, repeat. Finally got up to check on him and he had a dirty diaper. I felt like crap after that. But he had been playing that game all night. Even after his poop, he wouldn't go to bed until I slept in the guest room with him. We hate co-sleeping, but sometimes it's the only way we can function the next day (on the rare occasion he does wake up).

This past week, he was fussy and we could tell he wasn't going down. So after two attempts, we'd "sleep" with him. Although not much sleep went on. After 3 nights, we noticed his ears had more "wax" than normal. He has tubes and they were on the verge of getting infected. We could easily tell those nights that it wasn't normal and after him waking up twice and crying for a few minutes each, we abandoned the cry it out method. Only wish we could have caught the ear thing sooner (no fever, no redness or pain)

Do you have a kid? I'm assuming not because once you have one, this is all you can think about. Their cries, their well being, and trying to get as much sleep as you possibly can among 5000 other things all about your kid.

It's not helicopter parenting when it's an infant. It's just being a parent and trying to figure out what's the best way for you and your spouse to move forward.

People get the ferber method and cry it out mixed up a lot. Ferber is the interval method that people swear by but often people call it cry it out. Some people get this wrong and let their kid cry for 5 hours at a time.

Don't ask me what works, my daughter sleeps like shite

Scientist: people who aren't really smarter than anyone else, but wear white lab coats and are paid to discover shite we already know and tell us how to live our lives.

As an update to our earlier discussion, ferber couple has basically solved their kid's sleeping problem.

If my 2-year-old son was still a bad sleeper I'd lose my fricking mind.

We have been letting him cry it out since our son was about 2 weeks. He's been sleeping through the night 7pm-7am since 6 weeks. He's now 15 months.

It's not about just letting them cry it out. You have to understand why they are crying. If they are just fussy then you let them cry it out. If not feeling good then you don't.

Yeah, but how long do they let the baby cry?

I don't think people here are letting their kid "cry it out" for 30 minutes or more.

That's what I'm thinking. 15 minutes in a hot car with the windows rolled up should be the max.
