It's such a bad idea to make the kid live at home. I live a bike ride from campus and I'd never do this to my child. Cut the cord.

I would choose living in El Cid before I'd ever live at home while attending LSU.

I disagree. I lived at home all 5 years of college (yes it took me 5 years.. Ha ha look at the idiot). I still went out on weekends and stayed over at a friends house that lived near campus. But during the week I was going to class and studying. Going home every night. Sure I feel sometimes that maybe I missed out on something's but in the end it's better. I walked out of college completely debt free making $70k a year. I don't regret it at all.

The best parts of college aren't the big parties on thurs. fri. and sat. they are a group of guys getting randomly drunk on a whim on a tuesday and ending up fricked up lost and degenerate at a pizza place on the wrong side of town.

You can still go out and party on the weekends as an adult, the spontaneous fun at all hours of the day and night is something fairly specific to college, and living at home is not conducive to that.

Teach him how to spot good dope. He's going to do drugs, might as well have him doing the real thing instead of biting some dude's face off.

And I think freshmen have to enter the ticket lottery in the first week or two of school through their PAWS. Most get the full season package, some unlucky ones only get half.

commuting from home

His life will suck. This is going to hold him back more than anything, but I can understand doing so for economic reasons. If you are doing this because you don't think he's "ready" yet, you're the reason why.

Where is he commuting from? This makes a big difference in how to get to campus. Assuming he's coming from Ascension Parish, I-10 should be completely fine at 7:00am.

In order to get tickets, students submit a request for tickets. They are handed out on the basis of a points system, which means that freshman sometimes, but don't always get them. They will usually at least be able to get tickets for non-conference games, but big SEC matches are harder to get. The thanksgiving weekend game is always available. Students get priority points throughout the year by attending free sporting events that will be advertised. There's generally 1 or 2 point nights for women's soccer, a couple for volleyball, gymnastics, basketball, women's basketball, baseball, ect. All sports other than football are free for students with their ID, so a freshman can rack up points quickly.

If they don't get a student ticket through the university, things get more complicated. They can buy student tickets second hand, but they check ID's at the gate. Usually, as long as the person on the ID sorta looks like the person using it, they're good. The issue comes with the risk factors involved. There is also a system of getting "upgrades" on student tickets, but these are often not available for marquee conference games.

I think everyone - including me, earlier - is giving this random stranger way too much shite for having his son live at home his first semester. Maybe it's the son's choice. Maybe they pulled all their resources together and can only afford tuition and books. He's not going to BRCC; he's going to the state's flagship university (hopefully majoring in something other than liberal arts). So he has to start out at home. There are many worse alternatives.

I lived like a king during my nine years of school in Baton Rouge and now have the student loan payments to prove it.

The name on the student ID doesn't have to match the name on the ticket.

Did you ever getting the nagging feeling your friends resented you saving money by crashing at their place every weekend? Doesn't matter how good a friend if you do that for a couple years they will be unable to not harbor some sentiment that you are taking advantage of them.

I disagree. I'm still paying on my student loans and will be for the next 5 years or so. But I wouldn't give up my time living in the dorms/apartments for anything.

Breesus post early was the best thing that could have been said. LET THE BOY LIVE AWAY FROM HOME. Can't stress this enough.

Im just stating from first hand experience. I did it my first semester and it sucked balls. School felt like work and not like a whole new community with a social life.

It really wasn't every weekend. Maybe 8 to 10 times a semester. I really wasnt that big of a party person in college. That's why I feel I really didn't miss out on anything. I'm much better financially for it too.

It's a financially prudent decision. I'm not trying to rag on you just commenting on human nature.

I had decent amount of freedom doing this. But my mom would definitely call me out for skipping classes if she knew I had an early one. I can't tell you how many times I was driving to school and detoured to Rainbow or Tiger mart to get a 40oz and go drink and pass out on a buddies couch, wake up with them about 10 and get more fricked up in Power Dorm or on Jennifer Jean. I was a terrible student first two years.

IMO, if the the kid is living at home for any reason other than financial necessity, they're more than likely making the wrong choice.

It's not all about partying too. It's about learning to do things on your own and smoking fat doobies with your buddies.

I was very happy I lived at home in college. Was a stable good place. Hot meals, free laundry. But... my parents were not nearly controlling or unreasonable. All they'd ask is that I go to classes and, when out, call at 2 am If crashing somewhere else.
That payphone outside Sports(Reggies) got a workout back then.

I don't get why everyone is giving the OP flak for having his kid live at home. Unless the parents are overbearing, why spend the money to live away from home during college? If he's going to into a meaningful major he's going to need time to spend on his studies. I graduated in ME and all of my buddies who lived on their own/ with roommates had mommy and daddy paying for it (if the OP can do it then more power to him). It was rare to know someone in our classes that payed for rent on his/her own, truly living on their own dime and getting through engineering with decent grades..it can be done, but by very select few.

Of course when I lived at home my parents were pretty cool about it, never got on to me as to why I would get home at wee hours in the morning. I still had to work to pay for car note/insurance/gas/food and anything else I wanted, I couldn't imagine tacking on rent and still staying on the ball with school.

Exactly.

The OP's son is getting half of the college experience living at home. I promise you that by the end of his freshman year he'll be hellbent on getting his own place.
