Never seen it myself. I've think I've heard it referred to as pious ejaculations, but I may be wrong.

Hispanic Pentecostal

I know quite a few hispanic pentecostal. They are not like the pentecostals I grew up with. The women wear whatever they want including shorts, women cut their hair, they watch TV, listen to rock-n-roll, etc.

The ones I grew up with the women always wore dresses and couldn't cut their hair. They had no TV and weren't allowed to watch it.

My neighbors - the boy was my age and the girl was a year older - would come to our house to watch TV. One would stay outside and watch for the parents. They would switch off - one would watch Beaver then the other would watch the Partridge Family, etc.

They were VERY VIGILANT on the lookout for the parents. Apparently, the punishment would have been very severe.

The last time I saw the son was after we had graduated high school. Saw him at a bar downtown and he tried to sell me bag of weed. The daughter married a fairly well-to-do guy. Some friends and I wound up at their house for a party - drinks, weed, and cocaine.

The children rebelled big time against their religious upbringing.

My sense of speaking in tongues is it is not about mindless jibber jabber nor is it evidence of the anointing of God. The speaking of tongues took place on the day of Pentecost and came upon the disciples who proclaimed the gospel to those who did not speak in their native tongues. Jerusalem, at Passover, had peoples from all over come to worship and to speak to them the Holy Spirit gifted the disciples to speak in other languages....many were saved so therefore an understanding must have taken place. The speaking of tongues has been co-opted as some sort of sign of religious standing which is silly and folly. God scattered at the Tower of Babel yet overcame His own action by gifting others.

Without the threat of afterlife repercussions, you have no method to control.

But the last two Sundays someone has been “speaking in tongues”. I don’t get? Is it fake?

You don't get it because you are sane...

Is it fake? Yep. MAYBE the person feels they are overcome with "spirit" but come on.

Time to find a new church. Time to be honest with the wife. Just tell her you can take nothing from the church seriously if this is part of it.

ETA... Find another church. I would not get divorced over this, but me sitting through a service and rolling my eyes or smirking and making muffled comments to my wife would not help.

Agree.

Look, I have enough trouble with the parts of the Bible I do understand. I'm not about to try to tell other people what they should or should not do.

I'll stick with car advice or business advice. I'm fairly competent there.

So you think it's going out on a limb to say that people that engage in this practice are engaging in a silly, superstitious practice that is not real?

I had an employee who "spoke in tongues". He could do it on demand. I'd point to him and he'd "ablah dablah dooblah" like a pro.

Then I'd ask him to translate what he'd said...

"Oh I don't understand the tongues, that's a different gift. I just have the gift of speaking in tongues."
