Sugar is a common ingredient in old fashioneds..

If you want it whiskey flavored just ask for whiskey on the rocks with bitters and a splash of cherry juice.

What bar were you at?

nvm, you would be surprised how many places have a rough time making the basics.

I've been there probably 10 times in the past several months and never once has anyone in our group been asked for an ID. I get it, but its not like CB can't afford a doorman. It needs to be consistent. I was also pissed I had already ordered a drink, and then all this goes down.

I've also had old fashioned at corner bar and never have I had one that bad. They're usually decent. Not great, but for the type of bar, not atrocious.

People do not know how to make classic cocktails anymore. I ordered an old-fashioned at a bar in Baltimore (I currently live in Baltimore.). The bartender was a kid, and he put cherry juice in it. WTF?

BTW...you got me banned once. DIAF!

It should be more whiskey flavored with a hint of red tint, IMO

Yes, it should. .. How most bartender's murder good whiskey with waayyy too much cherry juice when making an old fashioned is a sin. And putting in rock candy?!?!? What is that shite?!?!? She would've been making me another, correctly, or let me do it. ... God, I hate when establishments these days alter & add their own ridiculous crap to drink recipes that have been in existence for decades. Stop fricking up,the drinks!!!

This is common for places that don't have simple syrup.

I bartend on the side and whenever anyone asks for an old fashioned I ask them how they want it. People make/like them a million different ways these days.

Only acceptable answer is sugar cube or simple syrup.

Also what was the liquor? I can't imagine.

I can only picture my 20-24 year old self at The Longhorn in the early 90's ordering an OF and what vile shite would come out of that bar.

I love an OF with the muddled orange slice and cherries but I've noticed that nice restaraunts outside the south make them differently. Is the pulpy one the classic or a southern variation?

How the hell do you even operate a bar without simple syrup?!?!? Damn, no wonder many bar's drinks suck these days. ... We made our own simple syrup. It's not brain surgery. If a bar doesn't have simple syrup, they shouldn't even attempt to make drinks calling for it in the recipe. Ridiculous.

I'm just telling you how a LOT of people make them.

Muddled cherry/orange is also very common in the drink now.

Some substitute cherry juice for grenadine. Grenadine is the appropriate ingredient.
