If I didn't know how to make it, I just have to call somebody, or something?

Muddled cherry/orange is also very common in the drink now.

Standard recipe is muddles sugar cubes, bitters, & orange peel. Cherry is added at the end, along with grenadine floated on top.

What exactly is supposed to be in it? I've always wanted to order it but don't want to get it and not like it. Don't want to to wast the money or alcohol. Just weird like that I guess.

I thought that was closer to a traditional Manhattan.

A Manhattan has sweet vermouth, definitely not grenadine. I have no idea what this guy is talking about. Neither an Old Fashioned or a Manhattan have grenadine.

This is why it's silly to act all sanctimonious with regards to cocktails. The original was bourbon, bitters, sugar and water. So you're already messing with a traditional recipe. And that's fine.

Not really. Even bastardized versions don't use grenadine.

If you muddle the cherries you make your own grenadine.

A Manhattan contains cherry juice, does it not? Anyhow, I agree with one of the previous posters...whiskey is murdered by cherry juice.

wut. Find me a legit TRADITIONAL old fashioned recipe that calls for grenadine on top.. Please.

Rye
Bitters
Orange peel
Luxardo cherry
Sugar cube or SS

those are the only things in a traditional old fashioned.

Some people make it that way. I've never heard grenadine but what people do with drinks any more doesn't surprise me.

That's why it's best to just request the drink how you like it. There are a million ways to make a Manhattan/Old Fashioned these days.

I've been several places that use the sugar stick in their old fashioned.. It doesn't melt off enough in the time I drink it to make it THAT much sweeter...
