That's why you don't order old fashioneds in Gatlinburg.

I don't mind if they use a splash of cherry juice instead of a cherry because I like to take the fruit out after muddling and it's harder to remove the cherry carcass.

Nahh I'll use cherry juice sometimes too.. shits good (especially luxardo), I wont deny it. But missy doesnt understand that a tradional OF doesnt have any of that shite.

Yeah, that's the only point I'm arguing. His use of the term "original recipe" and include anything but the four basics.

There are a bunch of different ways to make an OF and a lot of them are good and my taste changes. Sometimes I want something a little sweeter so a muddle fruit OF isn't that bad. Other times I want a good ole bourbon taste with a hint of sweetness where the "original recipe" is perfect.

Yea, that was bad. A cherry, cherry juice AND grenadine? I got a toothache just reading it.

I don't care if that's how she likes it, but that's nowhere near the original recipe.

I had a bad ole fashion at restraunt calla last Saturday. Didnt really have any sugar and hardly any ice, tons of bitters though. Did not pair well with the filet tar tar at all.

Missy, just stick to making sig pics and stay away from old fashioneds

How about you stick to drinking them, & I'll stick to making them. ... I'm actually a better bartender than sig pic maker. The Peabody food/bev mgr. taught me well back in the Dark Ages.

Having cocktails made slightly different ways is half the fun. I'm sorry if you can't afford to pay for a drink you don't finish from time to time.

Which is why you generally don't muddle the cherry - you can't get the skin out unless you strain it. Muddling the orange peel - one small sliver or curl - with the sugar cubes & bitters is a better technique & gives a taste of sweet citrus without making it taste like whiskey & orange juice. Lemon is sometimes preferred by the customer, but he will usually tell you when he orders since most people drinking old fashioneds usually know orange is the standard ingredient.

Some bartenders use cherry juice in place of grenadine, but tend to be heavy handed with the juice, or worse, add both. This is why a scant amount of grenadine is floated over the top by drizzling it over the back of a spoon. It's really not even a tsp. - only enough to give a hint of sweetness & reddish color.

Also, as I said, ginger ale, simple syrup, or 7-up/Sprite is not an ingredient of the standard, original recipe included in the "Bartender's Bible." A splash of club soda is used because it makes the drink taste "lighter," but doesn't add any extra sweetness.

An original old fashioned shouldn't be overly sweet or "syrupy." There are only hints of sweet & tart but they do not "hide" the flavor of the whiskey; they enhance it.

Why don't you guys just man up and drink whiskey like it was meant to be drunk without all that girly sugar and cherry juice crap in it.

Here is the "Bartender's Bible" recipe you're quoting:

quote:

Into an old-fashioned glass put a small cube of sugar, a dash of Angostura bitters, a teaspoon of water and muddle well. Add 2 oz. Old Thompson blended Whiskey. Stir. Add twist of lemon peel and ice cubes. Decorate with slice of orange, lemon, and a cherry. Serve with a swizzle stick.

Bartenders Bible (1991) by Gary Regan

Shockingly, there's no mention of grenadine.
