I really just like old cocktails that contain booze and fruit. These new mixers (including grenadine (not new)) are not my cup-o-tea.

LINK Old Fashioned

[quote]Old Fashioned Cocktail YIELD: 1 Highball Glass Ingredients
* 2 sugar cubes (see substitution below)
* Few dashes of angostura bitters
* 1 lemon slice (the long way like a wheel)
* 1 lime slice (the long way like a wheel)
* 1 maraschino cherry with a little juice
* 1 tsp grenadine (see a "maybe" substitution below)
* 1/4 cup good bourbon
* Club Soda
* Ginger Ale

You will find recipes that might sub lemon for orange or add ginger ale to the standard soda, but grenadine is ALWAYS an ingredient of an old fashioned. Grenadine is in the standard original recipe.

Eta - and I was bartending before many of you frickers were born.

I wonder what is classified as "good bourbon" for that drink?

shite, why stop at ginger ale? Throw some apple juice in that fricker while ya at it.

It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt.

I think they do that at Don's here in Lafayette. I've never had it, but a friend was telling me about it the other day.

And grenadine, some add cherry juice instead or with the grenadine. The original recipe uses soda, only, not Ginger ale.

My run of the mill one I serve is
1) muddle cherry and orange
2) add ice and pour packet of sugar in the raw over ice
3) whiskey
4) dash bitters
5) optional splash of soda

I always confirm to make sure this is how the person wants it. Some like lemon or lime in it too

Edited because I didn't mean to respond to the recipe with the whole fruit orchard in it.

You keep referring to this original recipe. I don't think you understand.

I was taught to muddle bitters into a sugar cube and an orange slice. Add ice, bourbon, splash soda, and cherry. Some people muddle the cherry as well (and the last bar I worked at called for this in their recipe), but the ingredients never change, except for simple syrup subbed for a sugar cube.

On a side note, finding a decent sazerac cocktail is another one of those drinks that a decent bartender should know but doesn't.
