The shooter was defending property from people who threatened his life. It was one event not a sequence of individual events broken down by the location of the participants as the event transpired.
If the carjackers had shot the person who got out of the vehicle outside the vehicle would the murder have been separate from the carjacking or part of the same criminal event? First degree murder or second degree murder. Shouldn't the event be treated the same from either the carjackers and he victim's perspectives?

Point at gun at an armed citizen while trying to rob them is a dangerous way to live life.
One has a chance to learn from this lesson. Maybe he'll go on to college and work with kids like him to make them see that a life of crime can lead to your own death and destruction. I'm sure he'll reform after this life changing experience and not be bitter because his friend was killed by that mean white guy.
