It's an obstacle course with a defined score that is determined by the player only. It's not judged.

ETA I know I'm like three pages late. I'll continue reading.

They certainly deserve to be called athletes before NASCAR drivers. How can drivers be credited for being great athletes when the cars do most of the work? It's the equivalent of being a jockey in horse racing. Nobody mentions Eddie Arcaro as one of the GOAT athletes and Jimmie Johnson doesn't belong on the list either.

race car drivers

What F1 drivers experience during every race for up to 2 hours.

2G under acceleration.
4G under braking.
Up to 3G in high-speed corners.
The mental stamina to drive on the absolute knife-edge limit, all the time, for 2 hours.

Not to mention untold hours of non-race-weekend practice/tuning/setup on track in the car and practice sessions and qualifying during race weekend. They spend 25-30 hours a week in the car and many more in simulators or at the gym.

These guys might have the strongest necks in the universe.

Sebastian Vettel pole lap at the 2012 USGP

Doing over 200 kmh (120 mph) in the majority of the corners.

I've always considered an athlete someone who takes part in an activity that requires physical talent/movement and actually competes at a high level.

High level obviously depends on the athlete's age, but if you suck then you aren't competing, because you aren't getting on the course/field/court.

Just my opinion though.

exactly. you can play baseball blindfolded, doesn't make less of a sport. In the famous words of Chris Rock... "You can drive a car with your feet, if you want to. Doesn't make it a good fricking idea, you dumb mother fricker"

The ones that play competitively (as in PGA/amateur tournaments and what not)... of course they should. Anyone who says otherwise is just stupid.

The ones like me who hack around on weekends and some weekday afternoons? Absolutely, because then I can claim I'm an athlete!!

Some of yall are looking at it wrong and are arguing 2 different things. Sitting down on the toilet requires an "athletic movement". If I wanted to judge form or create a point system for turning toilet sitting into a sport, I'd be an "athlete". What level of athleticism is required to play my sport? Not a lot, not nearly as much as others. But it would be a sport & I would be an athlete on SOME LEVEL.

I know it's silly. But that's how we look at it in strength/conditioning
