My friend group has had a running argument for years trying to define what sports contain athletes. The term athlete is used to describe golfers, race car drivers, baseball pitchers, bowlers, etc. Where do you draw the line?

Yes.

But golf isn't a sport.

I think I draw the line at bowler.

Golf you have to be very flexible and have exceptionally coordination to execute the various shots.

Same for pitchers.

Get in a race car and drive wide open throttle for 2 hours and tell me they aren't athletes.

If you don't think a golf swing or a baseball pitch is an athletic move you cant be helped.

I'm a golfer. I really don't give a shite what you call me when I'm playing golf. I'm enjoying myself while your sitting around bitching about something that has zero relevance.

If golfers are athletes, so are bowlers.

I know you're joking, but let's just get everything on the table.

sport

: a contest or game in which people do certain physical activities according to a specific set of rules and compete against each other

Tiger woods, in his prime, could bench 400lbs.

I don't think you can discount bowlers, curlers et al.

The definition for athlete is very broad.

Any "sport" that you can play well drunk, is not a sport.

Golf doesn't necessarily require "athleticism" as much as it does an extreme amount of physical skill. You don't have to be fast, quick on your feet, etc, but you have to have an incredible level of body control and eye-hand coordination (to play golf well...anybody can "play"). There are so many different shots and conditions/lie combinations that it becomes absurd. Outside of hitting a 90mph fastball, hitting a proper golf shot is probably one of the more difficult things to do in sports.

Golfers can be athletic but not all of them are athletes.

I think that if you look at some of those guys, they "look" athletic. Look at Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, Dustin Johnson, Sergio Garcia, Zach Johnson, Camilo Vallegas...those guys are in incredible shape.

Then, there are the John Daly's and Miguel Angel Jimenez's of the world of golf that are...well...fat dads. Are they athletes? I don't know.

Are bowlers athletes? Hell no. Are race car drivers athletes? Some definitely are, like Carl Edwards.
