This is not a debate of Bernie Sander's philosophy of whether or not should it be free. This is just a simple question of should it be this damn expensive to acquire a degree? With more and more schools adding online based programs one would think that the overall costs would start to decline, but it hasn't. Tuition fees, admin fees, technology fees, room & board, textbook fees, etc. all seems to be increasing at an astronomical rate. So, generally speaking are we as consumers getting a fare shake or are we getting ripped off?

It seems overpriced to me...depends what degree you are going for.

Highly dependent on the particular degree and university.

It should be harder and cheaper.

If only I had a nickel for every time I've heard that....

No, and less people should be eligible for it.

If the ROI is positive, yes.

No. There are too many employees who are not instructors.

It shouldn't be expensive as it is. Part of the reason are the loans which students are basically to dumb to understand. Making it "free" will only increase the costs even more though. Which the taxpayers have to deal with.

Part of the problem too is the notion that everyone needs to go to college. It leads to huge waste (more folks getting worthless degrees) and debt. We really need to get vocational programs back prominently in high schools. People can make great money as welders, electricians, plumbers, etc.

There are also way too many worthless degree programs.

It should be cheaper for minorities since they deserve an equal oppurtunity.

The only reason it's expensive is because students have unlimited amounts of loaned money to spend. The university doesn't care if the student goes bankrupt afterward- the dollar is the same regardless of who funds it.

Overhead and administration are largely what you are paying for. It's insane the number of palms that need to be greased with every little fee.

Heck, I have a graduate assistantship that pays all of my tuition. However, I pay $1,330 each semester in fees. That amount has to then come out of my meager stipend.

Yes.

and cheaper.

Why? The cost is largely driven by what people will pay for it.

Unlimited access to student loans is the primary driver.

No.

It's the University-Book Publishers-Administrative Complex.

College should never be "free" like the Dems want (but know is not possible), however it should not be astronomically increasing yearly. I'm taking 6 hours of online grad courses this fall for $2,300 and that's relatively on the "cheaper" side.

Wasn't Michael Brown about to go to college before he was murdered by the police?

Depends how you look at it. Is just the education worth it, probably not. But add in the fact that you pretty much HAVE to have a 4 year degree in today's society, it's invaluable. So schools are taking advantage of this and selling a product at a price point much higher than what it should be.

That's not exactly true. Student loans allow students to spend more upfront than what they normally would otherwise.

Think of it like leasing a Mercedes when you should really be buying a Honda. You can stretch your money for something sexier in the short term, but it ends up costing you more in the long run.

That's a stupid myth, propagated by idiotic teachers.

Let me ask you something- who makes more- a plumber or the average English major?
