Arkansas wins, IMO as far as nice boating on freshwater lakes. So many and the water is nice and warm and really clear.
I grew up boating lake travis and austin (in the boat my parents kept in the driveway) lots of good memories. My mom would cover my eyes when we went near the Hippie Hollow area.
I like Texas, and could see living there. The weather is better than NOLA weather. (but it's so big different areas have different climates)
I don't get why so many hate on Texas. I think most of those people form an opinion based on one or two cities.
I haven't really met anyone who has been to Austin, San Antonio, Dallas and Houston who blanketly hates Texas.
I can make a vacation out of any of those cities, and that's not counting great places like Big Bend or the canyon.

The weather is awesome! It's warm ten months out of the year.
Lake Travis, Palo Duro Canyon, Texas Hill Country, Davis Mountains, etc.
South Padre Island is a very nice beach, and unlike the Florida Panhandle beaches, it's warm 10 months out of the year.
Southern part of the state is *not* a war zone. Don't believe the hype. It is, however, home to great Citrus fields.
Yeah, don't really care for any Texas football teams, so you can have that one.

Yep it sucks please don't move here.
Horrible place - hill country and Big Bend are unscenic as frick, BBQ is terrible, people aren't friendly. Not diverse at all.
Stay in Lousiana or Houston the capital of Western Louisiana.
