As a Roku owner, I bought the Chromecast to watch youtube videos on my TV and listen to music/podcasts through my A/V receiver. I think $35 is not too bad as a supplement to a Roku or Apple TV.

comes with a remote

This is a big advantage. I don't want to fool with my phone to change the TV. Even if I have it near, chances are I'll be using the phone and wouldn't want to switch apps just to change the channel.

It is an HDMI stick that essentially converts your plain old HD TV into a smart tv that allows you to stream from various popular apps (Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, WatchESPN, etc.) and allows you to mirror on your tv content playing on your mobile device.
Perfect, thanks!

watch youtube videos on my TV

This is the part that I don't get. Most of the videos that I come across are SD, just a handful of HD, and most are 4 minute clips of stupid people doing stupid things or bad ripoffs of music videos. Like crap that people send you in an email. So what is the appeal of hooking Youtube to my TV? How do you search for something worthwhile watching? Where on Youtube are full lengthe episodes of shows that I want to watch, in a resolution that doesnt look shitty?

Chrome cast was a huge waste of money for me.

Isn't it like 30 bucks?

I watch Shark Tank and Impractical Jokers on the YouTube app on my PS3.

I'm usually really drunk, so I don't notice the quality.

It is already on the roku, though most ISPs (or ESPN itself) try to limit your access if you don't also subscribe to the cable channel. There are often work arounds though.

Tell me about these workarounds, por favor.

WDTV ftw.

it will play any format on God's green earth meaning you can grab all those gorgeous MKV bluray 1080p rips with HD audio from your favorite private tracker and they will just work.

unlocked and free my friends. don't tell me about tversity and how you can jump through a transcode hoop to make something work. why not a device that just...works....

i get netflix, etc through like 8 different devices at my house right now so who cares about that.

My phones ROM already has a built in "Cast Screen" option and I can cast my phone screen to my TV meaning I can cast anything at all on my screen from movies, games, apps, shows, etc.

Ohhhhh I like this. How do I know if my phone (Note 2) is capable of doing this?

I'm not an expert, but some people use friends' log ins. Some set up there streaming device and log into WatchESPN and other channels that require the cable subscription and then cancel their cable while still paying for the internet with the same provider and the apps still work despite no longer paying for the channel/cable.

Western Digital. A non apple version of apple tv that apparently is compatible with commonly pirated file formats.

So if I'm not going to get apple tv (already have it) a good substitute would be getting both of these? How many of their services overlap?

Chromecast + Plex has replaced my cable and the need for a htpc.

It's the best purchase I've ever made

Imust have missed something in the article. Why is it better than Chromecast exactly? Chromecast is the perfect device already, not sure why you'd pay more for something that doesn't do anything useful. I mean$15 ain't shite for me, and I'm no OT baller, but given the choice, I'll keep it.

Netflix, browser, Plex, and I can use any of my smart devices to control it, and do so faster than a remote. So seriously, what'd I miss?

Disneyman, I'ma throw you a bone. Do not get both, choose one. To cut cable, you will need.....
1. A friend's Cox info. This is to get live Cox sports on Espn 3.
2. An Hd antenna, local channels in HD.
3. Newsgroup access and a newsgroup reader (shite gets tech heavy here, so read up before trying)
4. Sick Beard and Couch potato - I've heard this gives people access to shows and movies.
5. Plex - shoots out what you download to everything
