I wasn't trolling. I was just explaining your post to the guy that questioned what it was.
quote:

so a particularly slick codec is now considered a 'pirate format'?

I didn't call it a pirate format. I referred to formats that are commonly used in pirated file sharing web communities.

quote:

do you work for the MPAA or something?

No.

quote:

does that make me a pirate for ripping CDs into this 'pirate format'?

No one said you were a pirate or even hinted that ripping your cds in a particular format made you a pirate.

You did say this though:

quote:

you can grab all those gorgeous MKV bluray 1080p rips with HD audio from your favorite private tracker and they will just work.

unlocked and free my friends.
Now, there are certainly non-pirated uses for such, but much of that community revolves around pirated peer to peer exchanges if I understand what private trackers are (which I may not).

Anyway, no one called you a pirate, I was just interpreting what you wrote as saying that Western Digital is good for playing pirated stuff you find online without having to go through unnecessary or complicated steps.

I have CC and really like it. My biggest urk is that Amazon and ESPN are not usable on it yet.

yep, essentially better copies of shows i already pay for with DISH but fail for whatever reason to DVR it when it aired. so is it my fault my power went out and i missed the show? sorry DISH makes such a shitty product. if they made all the tv shows available to me on demand i wouldn't go somewhere looking for them.

let me reprhase that; WD isn't bowing to the corporate Gods that make something as simple as a CODEC unavailable on your PC for watching a video.

go look up the shenanigans you have to go through to install a MKV codec onto your Windows PC.

Microsoft has gone so far as to label the '007 shark' site as MALWARE because they figured out a simple solution to add more CODEC formats to your PC.

That pisses me off and it should piss you off.

Apple is no better. They bow to their Hollywood masters and make all the video & audio so ridden with DRM its practically impossible to enjoy.

I have no idea what you are upset about. You called me a troll for explaining your post to someone and then got defensive as if I had attacked you in some way.

I've been using the VLC player for every codec/format known for years

i get a little fired up about this. wdtv is the only open and free tv box out there i know about.

everything else is infested with a bunch of caveats as to why they only support like 2 video and audio formats.

in other words, if you're fine with shitty quality video & audio format, by all means go with what apple or google or microsoft provide you.

ps yes i have a chromecast too..i like it for our bedroom tv because we just watch netflix on it.

the wdtv is my downstairs premium 1080p true HD surround system.

ever try sharing those on a local network to a tv box? the answer is NO. VLC doesn't do that.

Can it stream an internet browser? That is the critical mass.

that is the purpose for Chrome cast. Roku will never have a browser or be able to mirror a browser because they make their money with apps.

the code is out for chrome cast. sooner or later most if not all apps will have a cast button.

I'm not huge on tech stuff, but aren't there apps for the roku that do exactly that?

any device that doesnt let you get on watchespn is far from perfect.

without a ESPN subscription you can not use WatchESPN. I believe ESPN is wanting to sell internet subscriptions before they allow it on chromecast. Otherwise most users are just stealing it.

Which is how tv will become a la cart eventually. However, because cable companies are the ones also providing internet access, they are still able to hold the consumer hostage. They just have to be more creative in their methods.

idk i havent kepted up with this tech stuff for a couple years. If they are they are 3rd pary apps. which Roku doesnt support. Think is Google has way more 3rd party support and allows it, over Roku.

with ATT and Google getting in on it, this will change. I was pissed when Kansas City won the initial Google Fiber city over Baton Rouge. I cant wait for it.

I may be confusing apps that allow you to "beam" media from your laptop, tablet, phone, etc. with mirroring a browser. I'm just learning about this stuff.

why would you need to if you have a subscription and you can already watch it at your house on your cable box?

I know the answer im just playing devils advocate.

This is why i think they dont have it yet. because most people that want watch espn on their chromecast, are just "stealing"/borrowing a friends subscription to watch at their house.

ETA: easy work around is to mirror ESPN3 from your laptop to your chromecast. why do you have to use your phone? again i know a ton of reasons you can say.
