I've been saying for a while now that the majority of speed limits on our interstate system are artificially low. Take I-49 for example. I applaud the raise of the limit to 75 but it is still too low. There is no reason that the limit shouldn't be 85 there.

Take a minute and read this recent article from a UT Professor of Transportation Engineering. LINK

quote:

Laws should not make people choose between what is legal and what is safe. Instead, let's put some trust in drivers. Although we all like to complain about other drivers on the road, the fact is that almost all of us get where we are going each day without an accident. Most of us are perfectly capable of finding a safe speed to drive at even without a speed limit sign.

quote:

Current best practices in transportation engineering — supported by extensive research by organizations such as the Federal Highway Administration, the National Cooperative Highway Research Program and the Institute of Transportation Engineers — is that speed limits should be set at the 85th percentile of traffic speed. That is, only about 1 out of 7 cars should be driving faster than the speed limit. Any more than that and the speed limit should be raised.

I'm fine with someone wanting to drive 65, just stay in the right lane. If I can safely travel at 75+ then I should't be penalized by law enforcement. I can't be the only one who thinks it's time re-evaluate limits right? Does the limit really affect how fast you drive?

WHY WON'T SOMEBODY THINK OF THE CHILDREN!???!?!?

What I really want to know is, why would you fix Staring lane, and then lower the speed limit. Whatever hack congressman did that deserves to be tarred and feathered.

Hmmm. How about instead, let's make the licensing exam far more rigorous and make people people take it every so often if their driving history would indicate a need for it.

There are frickin millions of people driving on the roads now that have no business behind the wheel.

Roads are typically designed for 10mph above the posted speed limit. That would mean interstates with an 85mph speed limit have to be designed for 95mph. That's a stopping sight distance of a little over 1200' which is almost a quarter mile. Do you really want the person behind you to need a quarter mile to safely stop in case you need to slam on your brakes?

I don't want teenage girls zipping around at 85 in their Camrys, driving with their knee and fricking with the radio. I'll consider the occasional speeding ticket payment for that to not happen.

The government shouldn't regulate roads anyways.

Don't tread on me.

However, the stupidity/irresponsibility of the American driver is at an all time high.

I'm more worried about the 18 wheelers traveling at those elevated speeds. They can't keep themselves from flipping and burning up at 60 why would I think they'd be any better at 80?

As someone that drives 12 from Hammond to BR regularly, I will say in my experience the vast majority of traffic related issues are caused by 18 wheelers out of the right hand lane.

Case in point: I drove to Juban Crossing yesterday. Left Hammond and did not exceed 60 mph until I got to the bridge before Walker. There were two trucks camped out in the left lane trying to pass a truck in the right. After they finally cleared, all manner of people weaved in and out to shoot past these guys.

I can't tell you how many times I see 18 wheelers in the morning drive with 40 car lengths in front of them camped out in the left and middle lanes. You say "Well it takes these trucks longer to stop". Great. Do it in the right hand lane.

Restrict truck traffic to right lane only or have the cops enforce the left lane passing only rules. If it takes you 40 miles to pass a vehicle in the right lane, you shouldn't be passing.

Whats the bigger threat to public safety, a guy cruising 80 in a 70 or a trucker holding up traffic for miles by passing another vehicle driving <1 mph faster than the other vehicle?

I challenge you to drive the speed limit on college or Essen from I10 to perkins.

Raise it to 90 on the interstates, I found some 85mph speed limits on west texas state roads. Wasn't bad.
