I agree, the biggest thing they need to enforce is left lane is for passing.

I can't stand when someone decides they want to set the speed limit and camps out there.

A collision at 85 mph is going to be brutal

Raise it to 90 on the interstates

Much like your other thread, this is comically retarded.

You're right. Which is why the limit should only be increased on roads that call for it. Raising the limit on I-10 / I-12 would be stupid but raising it on I-49 wouldn't be. There are roads in the US with 85mph limits that are traveled safely everyday.

You live in New Jersey.

You aren't competent enough to pump your own gas, much less drive over 55.

I think we need to think about this in two different realms. Urban freeways should probably have lower speed limits. When you're traveling through the city limits of urbanized Houston, Chicago, New Orleans, whereverbigtown USA I think it makes sense to have lower limits to account for more access and egress points on the facility. It's high speed, so if you introduce more points of access, you introduce a lot more decisions that must be made in shorter distances. It's safer that way and that's okay.

Now, on rural freeways...the nothingness from Lake Charles to Beaumont, the nothingness from Baton Rouge to Lafayette, the nothingness from Lafayette to Alexandria...those stretches of freeways are wide, they are open, they are straight and they often have very few access points. It's perfectly acceptable to design for 85-95 MPH limits.

The breaking distance for 95mph is around 650', including the reaction time. Also, if you slam on your brakes you'll need 1/8th of a mile to stop as well. It's "more" dangerous than driving 65, but not as onerous as you make it sound.

The difference between stopping distance for 95 to 65 is roughly double. That is huge.

Nope. Just the braking distance is 866'. The perception-reaction distance is another 350'.

Agist- well, so what? Old people don't drive as well as younger folks, not really sure why there's a problem being agist when it comes to driving.

Racist- again, so what? You know how many times I'll look over at someone causing issues in traffic and it's a female minority on a cell phone? Countless. Like, too many to even count. But it's not just racist...there are thousands upon thousands of white folks who need to be off the road as well.

People can't even drive 70 on the interstate now without crashing into something or someone else.

The interstates here are heavily congested with truck traffic. It's difficult and unsafe to travel 85 MPH on I-12. It just is.

I have a very amateur theory (with nothing to back it up, but that qualifies me to be an internet traffic expert), IMO 70mph is the worst because it is fast enough to kill but slow enough for ppl to feel like it is safe to text, social media, mess with the radio etc. If we took away the speed limits on the interstate ppl would drive based on traffic conditions and not some artifical limit and they would be less likely to check their phones when they are going 90 than they are going 70.

I'm neither a boot licker nor anti-police, but typically would be more on the bootlicker side of the scale.

I say that to give credence to my observation- no where else in the world that I have driven (a fair number of places) do I feel like highway patrol is out to get you the way they are here. Only in America do we have frickers hiding in ditches and behind trees pointing a radar gun to make a quick ticket.

Even if someone is parked on the side of the road watching the highway, people "speed" by without incident. No slamming on brakes, etc. They're there to catch actual assholes driving unsafe.

People that are going to text will do it regardless of speed. Texting on the interstate at 80 mph IMO is better than doing it at 35 mph on 4 lane urban road where there is much more going on that requires attention.

This.

Fatality rates are down b/c cars are safer.
That's it-no other reason.

Raising the speed limit would kill innocent people.
