Speed limits are also partly set to keep a road from getting torn to pieces. People drive like maniacs and bitch about knocking their front end out of alignment when they are going 25 mph over the speed limit through a hole beaten into the pavement by dumbass drivers who exceed the road's design limitations.

Pretty interesting evidence that speed limits actually can make drivers callous and unaware of their surroundings. Ever notice that if you're driving and you don't know what the speed limit is in the area you naturally drive more cautiously and more aware of your surroundings? Removing speed limits could make things safer period.

People in that situation aren't driving more cautious b/c there is no speed limit. They do it b/c they are scared of possibly getting a speeding ticket so they slow down and keep their eyes on the road looking for cops.

A very small percentage will.

The vast majority won't.

I don't care. Asians will still go below the limit in the left lane and everyone else will still be texting. Hell i'm driving as I type this.

You ever been to Viriginia? In Louisiana you get about 10 mph cushion from most LSP on the interstate. Virginia HP gives nothing.

ETA: I reread your post and see you are making an comparison internationally. Virginia still sucks.

Drive in Germany over a week or two on the Autobahn and then come back to I-10 and drive for ten minutes.

I did this in June.

In Germany, 99.99% of the drivers play by the rules. Here it's about 50%. The high percentage of correctly driving drivers in Germany allow folks to be able to safely drive at high speeds. In Louisiana, there are too many idiots driving incorrectly to safely raise the speed limit.

These idiots are why we can't have nice things.

Also-Large trucks stay in the right lane there (Europe) too. This is integral to being able to safely drive a car fast on a four-lane freeway. Trucks have more freedom here to pass in the passing lane.

I've been saying for a while now that the majority of speed limits on our interstate system are artificially low. Take I-49 for example. I applaud the raise of the limit to 75 but it is still too low. There is no reason that the limit shouldn't be 85 there.

I agree that the limits need to be increased, but only AFTER more/improved licensing requirements for interstates.

As someone that drives 12 from Hammond to BR regularly, I will say in my experience the vast majority of traffic related issues are caused by 18 wheelers out of the right hand lane.

Case in point: I drove to Juban Crossing yesterday. Left Hammond and did not exceed 60 mph until I got to the bridge before Walker. There were two trucks camped out in the left lane trying to pass a truck in the right. After they finally cleared, all manner of people weaved in and out to shoot past these guys.

I can't tell you how many times I see 18 wheelers in the morning drive with 40 car lengths in front of them camped out in the left and middle lanes. You say "Well it takes these trucks longer to stop". Great. Do it in the right hand lane.

Restrict truck traffic to right lane only or have the cops enforce the left lane passing only rules. If it takes you 40 miles to pass a vehicle in the right lane, you shouldn't be passing.

Whats the bigger threat to public safety, a guy cruising 80 in a 70 or a trucker holding up traffic for miles by passing another vehicle driving <1 mph faster than the other vehicle?

How about not letting companies govern down those trucks so that they can actually run with traffic and that problem stops.

In my current truck, I typically go 85-90 during the day, and 95-100 at night. On I-10 between the dirty dell and BR (excluding the chocolate city), that's not much faster than most people. If you were in my truck when I was going 100, you wouldn't be able to tell. Movements are completely smooth. During the day, I have to drive like an a-hole to get around all of the idiots on the road. If they weren't driving like idiots and hogging the road, I wouldn't be cutting in and out of traffic.

My old truck could go much faster much easier, so I'd usually go the same during the day, but 100-120 at night.

When I'm driving a car, it's usually faster than that both during the day and at night.

Once you get to 110mph, it takes some level of skill to drive when other people are on the road. You have to be able to predict what other people are going to do.

I honestly don't think most people would go over 80 or 85 if given free reign

Welcome to Utah, I can't drive 65!!!!

You get run down at 75 mph in California in a 65 mph zone.

The minimum speed should be raised to 60. If you aren't willing to run 60, then take HWY 190 across the state.

I can't tell you how many times I get on the interstate and am stuck behind caravans towing junk cars to Mexico, overloaded travel trailers, and people moving the contents of their double wide to the next trailer park.
