Promising kids Heaven and threatening them with Hell seems like poor parenting to me. Kids are programmed to trust what their parents tell them from an early age, and parents answer life's greatest questions as flippantly as they would answer a math question.

frick a vengeful Deity. If Jesus or God or Yahweh or whatever anyone wants to call him/them would condemn someone to hell or hellfire or Purgatory or any other form of punishment, then every one of them can place their mouth on my cock. That's exactly how I feel about places that preach that and I have found the Baptist to be the worst of the groups mentioned.

I like the idea of a higher being, I like church when they preach just well being and positive messages. Last time I went the message was love where you live and do good in your community. Everyone can get on board with that.

If you have a strict specific belief I would think it would be difficult to date someone who didn't agree 100 percent.

Sometimes? You need to talk and have this figured out before you get married and have kids.

We've talked about it. She's cool with me taking them to Sunday school but once they reach a certain age (I think we said 13 or 14), if they don't want to go they don't have to.

Wait, what? Faith is the only path Jesus spoke of. It's not about works, but it's about faith.

Few 13 and 14 year olds are mature enough to make that decision. They just want to hang out with friends. Good that you guys are communicating about this, few do.

I agree. I'm not afraid to admit that for a while the only reason I looked forward to going to church was because I got to see girls I had a crush on.

There will be more people in this thread talking shite about something they have no clue about than the rant and the poliboard combined.

These are the best.

So when they ask you why the guy you worship says there is one way, what do you tell them?

Wife is Presbyterian, I was raised attending a southern baptist church. Having said that I appear to be backslidden and she is a regular participant. We have a child that goes to church with her every Sunday, I on the other hand continue in my heathen ways and mostly do not attend.

My thoughts are that she can choose whatever she want as who am I to try to convert her to a denomination that I basically never attend. Same thoughts on child, allow child to be introduced and let the decision on choosing the denomination be independent.

I do have a few rubs against the group recital of various prayers, makes me think they are all sheeple and I don't participate in such when attending but, not so much of a deal that I restrict child's attendance.

Both believe in God and heaven, the rest can sort itself out.

That's an interpretation of the bible. In the catholic faith, it is the actions of a person that determines their salvation. Only Protestants have that, um, complicated view that words somehow trump that lived religion.

It's why Catholics believe people like Gandhi will be in heaven and Joel olsteen and that philandering preacher from healing place probably won't.

My mom was Catholic. Dad Baptist.

The Catholic church refused to recognize my Mom's marriage to my Dad, so she said frick it and converted to Baptist.

They stayed married for like 40 years.

Dated a girl in high school that was nondenominational, while I am Catholic. I went to her place a time or two, and I also went to some megachurches while at LSU. Every time I went to one of those I always felt empty, and I guess that is because I have a strong devotion to the Eucharist.

As a Catholic, you are called to raise your children in the faith.

On a side note, it is faith and works for Catholics, not just works by themselves. It is also more than just faith alone, as Protestants tend to follow this way.

No, simple minds just don't see it. All religions are just a form of passing positive energy onto something greater in hopes of meeting that energy in the afterlife. It's cute that everyone assumes there is an exact path as to accomplishing it, but it doesn't change the initial point of my post.
