Questions in regards to making a Will

I am 55 and need to put together a Will, have been neglecting it for to long. My assets are pretty straight forward. a nice savings and also a IRA and another investment account. Everything is paid off home and land. I have one tiny piece of land that is basically worth only a few thousand dollars that I inherited when my Dad and Brother passed. Very simple situation here, no wife currently and no children or immediate family left. I pretty much know who I am going to leave everything to. My main question is can I write my own will legally? Can I print out these free online on line documents for this and get it notarized? Or should I got to a lawyer or notary and get them to do it?

You can do a holographic will in Louisiana. I think it has to be witnessed by 2 people and in your own handwriting.

You CAN write your own. You CAN print out an online one.
HOWEVER, in all probability it will be invalid.
There is already incorrect information in this thread. Go to an attorney and get it handled. It shouldn't cost that much unless you are setting up trusts.
Edit to add: A lot of the online places that say their product is valid in Louisiana are incorrect.

You can do a will with a notary but for no more than a lawyer should charge for a simple will I would pay it.
That said I know a man that died with a significant estate and simply hand wrote his will and had the witnesses sign and had it notarized. His thinking--right or wrong I do not know--was he didn't want a lawyer or a CPA to realize the size of his estate and create an estate tax issue. He had a lot of heirs and thus far the IRS has not approached any of them.

Wrong. It must be entirely hand written , dated, and signed in your own handwriting.
No need for witnesses or notary.

Deacon is spot on. Go call a local lawyer. Beat him down on his price - get you a will. If he does real estate transactional work he will be happy as hell you called with the current market.

The term is "olographic" not holographic...
and an olographic will must be entirely in your own handwriting (not typed) and signed and dated by you. No witnesses. Or go see an attorney to draft one for you, that must be signed at the bottom of each and every page by you and before the attorney/notary AND 2 witnesses who are not family and/or heirs.

Spend a little money on a lawyer and get it done right. It will cost less than most of your trips to the dealership to get your car serviced.

Rhonda M. Gabe in Covington specializes in this type of situation. It’s all she practices, wills and estate planning. Did our simple will for $1,200. Have an attorney handle it and avoid unintentional issues later. She’s competent and from my perspective, highly recommended.
Edited to say that included the Medical Power-of-Attorney and Living Will for myself and wife. I may have the terminology wrong, basically our kids know to pull the plug. My PCP says have an attorney construct them, he’s seen issues with people trying to write the paperwork themselves.

No wife, no children. Quit being a cheap arse and pay an attorney. Or at least LegalZoom.
There’s a lot,of shite you’re not thinking about that a lawyer will. Like which one of your poor relatives is going to be responsible for pulling the plug or putting you in hospice..etc
My MIL, didn’t get her shite straight until she was on her death bed, and it wasn’t a pleasant experience for my wife.

Rhonda is my estate attorney as well. Also a really fun person to be with or around in a social setting - she’s my sister’s, sister-in-law - as such, I get the family discount.

Just a heads up, make sure your beneficiary on your IRA is correct, it trumps whatever is stated in the will.
