We're looking for a type of floor that will hold up well to kids (two boys under 6 and another on the way). We also have a 7 yr old lab that isn't overly energetic, so I think if anything the boys will be harder on the floor than the dog.

What type of eng. wood floor do you have in your house, and how has it held up to kids and pets?

I loathe going the laminate route even though it will hold up better and they make some laminates to mimic handscraped/distressed wood... but it's laminate.

I bought Lumber Liquidator's bamboo after Katrina and it's beat to crap. I think good bamboo is supposed to be one of the tougher light colored woods, but this stuff is just garbage.

We went with the thicker stuff, 30 year warrantee. Two older dogs, but younger dog cousins come to visit. It has held up very well, almost two years.

As Gaston said, avoid bamboo.

Ours is pretty dark and seems fine, FWIW.

I installed some Pergo about 10 years ago. Our 2 girls plus all their friends and 2 labs and it still looks really good. It was Pergo African Paudak, but that particular style has been discontinued for a while now. Each board also has the underlayment already attached to it, so it made the install a little easier as well.

The only bad scratches we got was when my oldest daughter was 5, she convinced her grandparents it was ok to drive around the living room with her little sister on top of her pedal car that had a busted wheel. Had to pull up some boards and rearrange them so the worst scratches wound up under an area rug

One of these supporting 2 kids doesn't work on the floor

I've been putting the wood tile in a few houses. Looks great. Go check some of those out.

First off, F engineered wood flooring. Made the mistake of putting that in our house. The stuff is garbage. shite scratches at the drop of a hat.

I will eventually pull the crap up and put down the ceramic tile that looks like wood flooring. It's literally a once in a lifetime install. No worries, no scratches.

Two yearso I put down hand scraped birch eng. hardwood from Discount Floor and Decor in my house. It's stained pretty dark.

It's held up much better than the maple rfom lumber Liq. I had in the other house.

No kids, but two golden retrievers.

I don't mind this at all, but Mrs meeple thinks it feels too hard and cold underfoot for her liking.

we installed Pergo XP hand sawn oak laminate in our house 3 years ago. still looks like the day we put it down. They had it side by side with real hand sawn oak and you couldnt tell the difference. People who come over think it is real wood. A couple of friends have since put the same floors in their house. It is a breeze to put down. I put down 1200 sq ft in about 3 days. that was with 2 buddies helping. we are all in sales so it's not like we are super handy. Here is the link. to the floors i purchased. LINK

i put some in my rental house--ripped up two layers of vinyl and linoleum. I wasn't ready to tile (going to do a complete gutting eventually), so I threw down laminate.

these days it looks a LOT better than it did just 10 or fewer years ago. There is a sealant that is better than anything you can get on amazon or in hardware/box stores. There is only one place i can find that imports it. it's worth it: CLICK GUARD

a flooring store in Indiana carries it: see the very last product on their accessories page. LINK

best stuff ever if you're worried about water at all.

I put down engineered hickory that I got from wholesale flooring. They smoked pro-source's price. Wood is very durable, biggest thing I suggest in going with engineered is to get the distressed finished, it hides all scratches and dents 1000x better than a smooth finish floor would.

As others have said the ceramic tile wood looks great and alot more durable. I went with the engineered wood as was jsut doing my bedrooms and already had tile throughout rest of house in the high traffic areas.

We had the engineered hand scraped stuff 2 houses ago and held up well against an energetic minpin and a 100 pound golden retriever. I would install again when the time comes.

We have it and it has scratched from our Boxer. It hasn't gotten deep enough to see different colors but you can definitely see it when you shine a light. We have a medium dark color.

My dad has the "wood" tile in his bathroom. He loves it. I just think it would be freezing in our living room.
