But now you have to explicitly detail to every single customer that by declining a receipt they are declining any future opportunities to dispute the purchase they just made. Which is going to create an enormous amount of misunderstandings and uncomfortable situations that are worth far less than the cost of printing up a lot of unnecessary receipts.
No you don't. Just say "need a receipt"?
If you think you may need one, get one.

Hedberg had a bit about getting a receipt for a doughnut. What situation could possibly arise where I would need that receipt?

Why do places still automatically print receipts?

The business owner wants the transaction recorded (and proven by giving the customer a receipt.)
Else, how does the owner not know that the employee didn't just pocket the cash?
And as noted, the receipt is a document that records the completion of a business transaction. (You bought a newspaper, not a case of beer... put the beer back in the cooler.)

The business owner balances his books and keeps transaction records based off a piece of paper he gives me that I (presumably) take with me or throw away?
Do some of you read what you write? Again, makes sense that a business would have their own receipt that the cashier would print and put in a pile somewhere for their record but I'm talking about the receipt they give the customer.
How are so many missing this?
