Why do places still automatically print receipts? I'm far from an environmentalist, but it always seems like such a waste when they print out my receipt for a six-pack and I just have them trash it.

Can they get in legal trouble by not automatically printing it? Seems every place should ask you if you want a receipt or not.

Why wouldn't you look at your receipt to see if they charged you correctly.

Hedberg had a bit about getting a receipt for a doughnut. What situation could possibly arise where I would need that receipt?

I'm not doubting there are instances where it is necessary, but why do they automatically assume it is for everyone?

not giving a purchaser a receipt opens a vendor up to a lot of conflict later on (i.e. returns, disputed charges, warranty claims, etc.)...the cheapest way to gaurd against that is by issuing a receipt to each customer...if you as a customer chose not to keep up with that receipt, then shame on you...

The businesses that give you an option to email the receipt are just fishing for your email addy to spam you.

Some of you clearly fail understand this question.

1. I fully understand there are certain instances (business expenses or large purchases) where receipts are a must.

2. I fully understand that if a business refused to print receipts then they would open themselves up to some serious issues down the road.

However, the question is why aren't people given the option instead of printing everyone a receipt? If they give me the option to print a receipt, and I say no then I've forfeited my right for any claims down the road. If they give me the option and I say yes then I can complete and expense report or hold onto the receipt for later claims.

The fact that so many are missing the pointlessness of giving every person a receipt when less than 10% are likely to ever use it is staggering to me.

His point is if you don't need a receipt for something you'll never return, there should be an option to decline.

But now you have to explicitly detail to every single customer that by declining a receipt they are declining any future opportunities to dispute the purchase they just made. Which is going to create an enormous amount of misunderstandings and uncomfortable situations that are worth far less than the cost of printing up a lot of unnecessary receipts.
