My son was in town with a couple of his buddies for a wedding. I told him to ring me up when they are done with the wedding and going out, and I'd pick them up and give them a ride back to the house.

He calls around 2:30 for a lift, so I go pick them up around a popular area on Rainey Street. I'm sober as a judge. When I pull out, a police officer IMMEDIATELY does an (illegal) U-Turn and starts tailing me. He was really up my arse to the point where if I had to slam on the breaks, he would have probably rear-ended my car. So, as I was sober, I decided to frick around with him. I'm zig-zagging in and out of various neighborhoods (obeying all traffic laws). After a good 15 minutes of him tailing me, he decides to pull off and turn around.

Is this acceptable tactics? Was he waiting for me not to use my blinker, not to come to a complete stop, etc? As I mentioned, I was sober, but it was almost like the officer was harassing me.

What would you do or what are you supposed to do in that situation?

Yes, he was waiting for you to frick up so he could justify pulling you over.

Obey the traffic laws, and not give him a reason.

I believe it's illegal for them to follow anyone leaving a bar or something like that

But I've had them follow me from Tiger Land a few times

He was running your plates and looking for an infraction.

Not acceptable but I prefer it to people driving drunk.

I'll down vote this thread too. You are complaining that nothing happened to you...

It was 2:30AM. He was making sure you made it home safely. You were protected and served.

I ask because should I have pulled over and waved the officer to come and talk to me so I can explain the situation? I probably would have if he wasn't right up my arse like it was bumper cars.

You left a bar. He was fully expecting you to start driving off the road, then get a slam dunk DWI. Gotta meet those quotas.

Most definitely. This would have alleviated the officers concerns.

call 911 and report a stolen cop car that you suspect is being driven by an intoxicated car thief

No because people don't do that. Just drive straight home. He would have ran your plates and gone on with his night allowing you to safely move on with yours. Why frick with him?

I'd say checking out bar parking lots at 2:30am is probably a good way to catch some drunk drivers. Would you disagree?

So despite leaving a bar at 2:30am adn zig zagging through neighborhoods, he didn't even stop you or pull you over. What are you upset about again?

he didn't speak to you, stop you, impede your night in any way. He didn't harass you any more than someone following you on the interstate.

-pick up son
-drive to my desired location

that about covers it.

It is completely legal for cops to watch you leave a bar and follow you. However, they can only pull you over if you violate a traffic law or show signs of intoxication while leaving the bar or driving.

How else do you expect him to patrolfor DUI if he doesn't follow you?

I'm not finding fault with you, just dont see why its a big deal.

I guess I'm a little confused as to why he was tailgating me the majority of the time? I tapped the breaks a few times, but he continued on.

Also, we really didn't have DWI's when I was growing up. I've only been through a checkpoint one time, so this is my first experience with something like this happening. I really didn't know if this was proper procedure or protocol?

You didn't even get pulled over... you've still had no experience like that.

Perfectly legal for the cop to follow you. He definitely was trolling for a DUI. Sounds like he was running your plates to check for warrants, license status, ect ect.

I don't drink and drive because it's not worth it. In fact yesterday, I pull into a grocery store parking lot and this guy in an Audi S4 had an open container of Miller Light in his center console. The sunroof was open and it reeked of alcohol. The dude is in the checkout stand next to me buying more beer, and I'm floored. The thought crossed my mind to call it in, in hopes that this a-hole doesn't kill someone.

He was trying to make you frick up. I had a cop do the same to me, except he ran into the back of me. I got charged for DWI
