and that's with young kids, as they get older you don't get to go home after work, we were at the baseball field with my son last night until 8:30 and tonight it's gymnastics til 7:30

very few days I get off work and just go home

the weekends are mine to enjoy, if that makes me lazy then I don't care but I'm not turning down a fishing trip because my grass needs to be cut.

I can think of tons of things I see other people spend money on that I think is a waste but I keep my mouth shut because I'm sure they feel the same about me.

I have a lab. Lots of poop. Especially on a fresh cut lawn!

So... mow and clean on the weekend.

The weekend is for brewing beer, relaxing, doing yard work, and the multiple events we have to go to depending on what is happening. Does it really bother you that i pay for a maid to clean my house?

Nope, it doesn't bother me at all.

Because I have a lot of hobbies. Especially during the summer when grass is growing fast

First and foremost, this is the answer. I cut my own grass until work had me staying after 5 quite often, so I couldn't always do it during the week. I fished on the weekends, and really didn't want to give up a day of fishing for something I could pay a guy $40 to do. I hate my yard looking remotely un-kept, so it was worth paying someone to make sure it was done even if I couldn't get away from the office on a weekday.

quote:

I have a 4 and 2 year old. The 4 year old likes to ride with me while i cut the grass.

It's not that difficult to make your kids breakfast, then go grab the vacuum and vacuum the house in 5-10 minutes while they eat.

If you aren't lazy, you clean your dishes after you eat and put them in the dishwasher. when you get home from work and the dishes need to be unloaded, you unload them.

After you put your kids to bed and you and the wife sit down to watch something stupid on tv, fold the clothes while you watch, unless your too lazy to.

When the garbage needs to be taken out, take it out and walk your lazy arse to the garbage can outside. I pick up the bathroom garbages while my kids bathe.

Instead of taking 30 minutes to take a shite while you play on your iphone, blow the shite out your arse, wipe yourself and be done with it in less than 5 minutes. take 30 seconds to scrub the toilet with some comet. Before you sit down to shite, put some comet in the tub too, hell even the sinks. Take 30 seconds to scrub each down and rinse it. You just shite, cleaned the toilet, sinks and tub in less than 10 minutes, and didn't waste life sitting on a toilet playing on your phone.

Clean up after yourself lazy arse.

Paying for someone to clean your house or cut your grass, if you're not old or handicap, is lazy. Don't give me the excuse that you don't have time b/c you're busy all weekend. You're not busy, you're lazy. If you want to pay for it b/c you don't want to do it, that's fine. Your money, do what you want. But don't tell me you don't have time to do it. It's not that difficult to do when we are talking about a normal 2000 sq ft house that sits on a quarter acre of land.

This is laughable. I actually probably have time to cut grass with my new job, but I have landscaping that's a bit out of my ability to keep up and in Houston I still pay $40 for a Mexican to keep it looking pristine. I get up at 4 a.m. to run or swim, head to work for 6-7, back by 4:30 only to have the 1.5 year old ready to eat at 5, then I spend time with the family/cook, and finally bathe and put the kid down. It's 7:30 by this time and a lot of nights I try to get an additional run or bike ride in. With all of that, I'd lose my mind scrubbing toilets while simultaneously shitting .

And to you calling us all lazy, my house keeper told my wife she thought our house was a second home or something and we didn't live there, because it is always clean. We do all the typical things, but every two weeks we have someone come in to get the stuff that's difficult to do on your own (scrubbing shower, toilets, tubs, bathroom mirrors, etc.).

If I was starving, then yes I'd say it was an issue. If I lost my job, I'd be an absolute lazy shite to still pay for it. But we make more than enough to pay someone so that we can sleep in on the weekend, or actually use our weekends to do things we enjoy instead of working all week just to do more work at home.

Two biggest wastes of money IMO:

Paying someone to cut your grass

Housekeeper

Think of the money spent of the aforementioned over a 25 year span and how it affects your retirement. You'll be astonished as to how much people waste on these two services.

My time is more valuable to me than my money.

Letting someone mow my grass for me allows me to spend extra time with my family.

I neither cut my own grass or pay someone else to cut it.

I have two teenage sons who do it for me. They know not to complain about it either as we have a pretty equitable distribution of household chores in our family.

You work on the weekends?

Obviously someone that works 7-12's won't have time to do just about anything.

You find the time to workout though. I'm lazy. I don't find the time to workout, but i don't say i'm too busy to workout. I don't b/c i'm too lazy to find the time to do it, although that changed about 2 weeks ago and i feel better with the less sleep i'm getting. I sacrificed 45 minutes of sleep to work out.

I pay to have my house cleaned. Why don't you worry about your worthless self instead of "chastizing" others over the internet over what they do and don't pay for.

I'm not chastizing anyone. I said it in my post, your money, do what you want with it.

Just about everyone is lazy about something. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with it. Most of us have busy lives. Somethings you just don't want to do. It's not that you don't have the time to do it, it's that you don't want to sacrifice your time to do it b/c it's not something you like doing. that's what being lazy is.

WHen you have kids you just need to learn how to be more efficient with your time. It's a good 1.5 hours for me to do the lawn how i want it. Doesn't mean i do it all at once. Weed eat and blow one day, 20 minutes. Cut the front yard the next day, 20 minutes. Cut the back yard the next day, 15 minutes. Edge the driveway and blow the next day, 20 minutes. From the time i get home and my wife gets home with the kids is about 30 minutes. The wife comes out in the afternoon for 10-15 minutes every now and then and weeds the flowerbeds.

Having an infant makes things a lot more difficult since they are so dependent on us, but with two parent, things can get done. It's if you feel like doing it is the question.

Jesus Christ people. Grab your fricking gun, get on your lawnmower at 6am and cut your grass.....like a normal person. If you have time you can even mow your lawn. Boom, problem solved. You still have plenty of time and you didn't get robbed while you were cutting your grass.

So it's better to be miserable for 30-40 years so you can be less miserable for 20? Not saying cutting and cleaning makes everyone miserable, but for many it is a chore, nothing more.

Planning for retirement is a good thing. Sacrificing your life when you are young is not.

As with all things, there is a balance point here where you can plan a retirement and not hate your life now. For example, you can save money and time by alternating weekends with a service.
