Never did the daddy date thing but enjoy, they grow up real fast. I just sent my baby girl off to college a few weeks ago. We spent the entire Friday before we moved her to Waco on a Daddy-Daughter day; let her pick what to do and where to go. Started off at Cafe Dumonde in Quarter then went to the Aquarium, City Park to putt-putt then kayak. That evening we went to a movie (The Expendables....her choice). Was a nice day.
She's only been away for 2 weeks but the house is different without her being there.

A 'date" connotes a social engagement....

And why do you think it connotes that?

People are really splitting hairs over the use of the word date.

Yes, when she opens the door and has that amazing look on her face, it cannot be explained, especially to the idiots on here thinking a "date" is sexual.

quote:Ambiguity? Seriously? I don't think so.
When you call a situation like that a "date", you create too much ambiguity in the English language.
quote:If you're having issues understanding the use of common English phrases and colloquialisms than I suggest to study up or something.
Women do this when they call their female friend their "girlfriend". The word "girlfriend" should only be used to describe one type of relationship, just like the word "date" should only be used to describe a situation in which the people involved are courting. Stop trying to change the definitions of words.

in addition to the other comments, calling it a date ties in how you treat them with what they should expect when they go on a real date later in life. Having dinner with dad is oversimplifying it. I have dinner with my wife, son, and daughter every night. I don't always have a date with my daughter.
The goal is here is to set the bar so high that any guy who tries to date your daughter pales in comparison. Call it a date. Impress your daughter so much that the teenagers who will inevitably come calling look like schmucks. How can anyone be against this?

Yes, I did this a couple times from age 8 - 16. She appreciated it and I think she knows how a lady is supposed to be treated.

quote:I gotcha. I just think the term "first date" like it's used in the title of the thread implies the actual first time they go on a real date. I opened the thread thinking it was going to be about overprotective dads tagging along on their daughter's first date.

It's weird for a father to spend time with his daughter?
Not sure why it's different with a girl than a boy (I have both)

It's actually good that we're at odds with people on this. It validates the reason for taking your daughter out on dates. The guys here associate "date" with "sex". That's what we're fighting against.
ILB said it best.
