Managing organizational changes of any type?

In a project management context, change management may refer to a project management process wherein changes to the scope of a project are formally introduced and approved.

It is bullshite. People who can't figure out how to productively perform their own jobs, latch on to this idea claiming they can figure out how others should do their jobs differently. Meanwhile, their responsibilities get forgotten and subsequently get reassigned. Then they claim that as part of their accomplishments.
It used to be called passing the buck.

For us, it's keeping a record of changes to the system which would include detailed work and approvals for the change.

All that crap is foolishness.
A lot of this all sprang from Jack Welch allowing someone from HR to actually have a damn opinion about how a business should be run.
He shoulda banged Suzy sooner and told the HR mavens to STHU.

In IT, Change Management actually means something. In any other corporate areas it's likely bullshite
Posted on 8/11/15 at 12:25 pm to Jim Rockford
The common definition of it, in most corporate settings, is people that are responsible for rallying support among the employees for potential change.
It's not a bad idea if done well.
However, most of these guys propose change for the sake of change, not for any actual improvement. And that's where the BS comes from.
Change can be good, it can be bad. Generally, never changing leads to irrelevance, a lesson that some companies (hello Microsoft) are late to learn.

Configuration control is interchangeable at my company for that. If you are in manufacturing, that is an area you need that stuff.

Change Management is a fluffy management term to basically say that they are experienced in altering a company's business philosophy (usually for the worse). Often used in conjunction with "culture change".
This is not to be confused with Management of Change, which is often used in engineering terminology for critical equipment maintenance management and is actually mandated by certain safety and environmental codes (Process Safety Management, or Environmental Risk Management Program) for toxic chemical management. Basically, ensuring that equipment used in maintenance and modifications are compatible with the process so you don't have a system failure.
