So I crunched some numbers and between equipment rental, labor and transport, the average bid should come in at $86,753.09

They're getting hosed.

Looks like the bid is actually 900K. There is an additional 300K that wasn't reported.

Not just that but you'll have to find a crane company from out of state since almost all of them within a 150 mile radius have said their equipment will not be used for the monument removal.

Here's some irony... A lot of cranes are stored in the north east due to the density of high rise buildings here...

What are the odds one is used to tear down a memorial to those killed removing a Yankee state govt?

All the city has to do is say that the bids came in over budget (factual statement) and cancel the bid due to insufficient funds.

They don't have to award a contract that's over the requisitioned funds available just because it was low. They can then put it out to bid again if they want, hoping for more competition and more competitive bids... or they can adjust it to put one statue out to bid with alternates for the others if they want.

Yeah, I went back and reread what I wrote and it's not quite what I meant. Didn't mean to say that they're locked into executing the project with the bid they've got now. Meant to say that without starting all over with the bid process, they are.

I love when people assume someone else has no idea because they don't either.

Yet another wrong assumption from you.

No I don't, but I know I've rented a crane to put an AC system on the top of a 4 story building and it was like a $1,200 job. I can't even tell how high or big those statues are, I have no idea.

But I do know, that a city like NO has people that probably do crane work full time and something like this is not that expensive when you are local.

Congrats on knowing zilch.

No where in that article does it suggest they were waiting on more bids

Those are not the numbers we want, but the numbers we need right meow.

I'd say zero since these statues aren't ever going to actually come down

They required the bases be removed as well

Well then this is a much harder project and I revoke my bid.

The article said they opened the bids this afternoon. Well, opened the singular bid.

That'd be the best case scenario.

There are a shite ton of cranes between Jacksonvillle and Houston/Dallas.

Finding a crane isn't the issue.

Rent a crane and operator for $200/hr and have this shite knocked out in a couple days. Add a rigger or 2 and you're looking at a low price to do this.

crane + operator
2 riggers
mats
permits
flat bed or low boy for transportation

there are no shortage of cranes in the south, two of the largest in the world are located across the street from each other right now in Lake Charles

The Landrieus have been destroying NOLA since "Moon" was mayor!! So sick of these grifters!
So Mitch's bright idea is to flush 600k down the toilet on a useless gesture when NOLA doesn't have a pot to piss in! BRILLIANT!!
Meanwhile, the streets are becoming more impassable, crime remains king, and schools are crap.
Great job, Mitchy

lol no. There are probably 10 places to get a crane in BR/Geismar alone. Anything from a 15T picker to a 400T truck crane or crawler.

ETA: i worked for a crane company for 3 years

High rise cranes are tower cranes which are useless for something like this.

Only one bidder has submitted a proposal to take down three Confederate monuments in New Orleans and is asking more than three times the amount the city has budgeted for the project.

What does that mean to you? If the bidding was over, the correct and very normal way to say it would of been "only one bid was submitted".
