Leadership is NEVER a pain in the azz if you are an actual leader.

The fact that the OP does not want the promotion defines him as a follower who will be happy staying back at camp weaving baskets with the ladies.

Don't take the promotion OP. You do not possess the skills to do it successfully.

I'm already a boss and my department runs smooth as can be.
I only answer to 1 person and have all the freedom in the world that I want. No headaches, no on call 24 hours. And my salary allows me to live more than comfortably

And ALLLLLL of that could change because of who your NEXT boss might be.

That said, if it's you, then you get to make all of those decisions. Besides, maybe some of the headaches your current boss has are due to his own actions.

At the very least you should contact the Regional and talk through the position. If you're good and have been with the company for a little while, then there may be some accommodations the company could make for you in the transition.

If you make $$$ for said company, you should have no problems staying put. But, as others have said, you are "saying" to the hire ups, "no more promotions, please". If you are ok with that, perfect.

You would be in the Top Left or Top Middle of our 9-Box system.

Here is your answer.

Yes, I have considered what I might do in the event you retired. Yes, I do have an interest in your position and believe I could master given time and circumstances. However, I am in my early 40s and would prefer to wait for the opportunity at a later time. I do realize that opportunity may not materialize and that is okay as I appreciate my current role and believe it affords further growth and development. I am flattered, do appreciate the confidence but in the larger picture it is a bit premature.

How well will you be able to tolerate a new boss who does things differently than you would have.

What if the new boss pushes some of the headaches to you.

What of the new boss takes your freedom.

those would be very valid concerns, no doubt, and should be a set of factors under consideration....good points

I told him I had no interest in that position and that I was happy doing what I'm doing.

Should I apply for it?

It's a considerable amount more than I make now but the headaches far outweigh the rewards of having that position.

If the money isn't the most important thing to you then I would stick with doing the job that makes you happy.

I think hes underrating the fact that if he told his wife he left 40k a year on the table or some other crazy amount she will almost 10/10 think hes a beta cuck, or she's perfectly fine star fishing sex every other week.

So you are scared of more headache and responsibility and do not want to make more money?? WTF? Good luck if you ever find a woman to marry and ever have kids. ALWAYS apply for your boss's job when they leave. If you don't his boss will think you will never be management material because you lack the drive to better yourself. Quit being a pussy and go for it.

Damn!!
I can tell you didn't read a damn thing I posted. I'm already in management.

I've also been married for more than 25 years and have 3 grown kids.

What is the org chart like?

In my last corporate job I reported to an SR VP who reported to an Executive VP. The SR VP had myself and two other VP direct reports. When the Sr VP left I was offered that job, but proposed eliminating the Sr. VP position and giving the three VPs a each a noce raise.

The EVP loved the idea as it created many efficiencies in our division. I left the company six months later and went into business for myself.

Would there be room for you to propose something like that?

This dude gets it. Money ain't everything. I've worked long hours at a shitty job before for a significant bump in pay (+40%). It was not even close to being worth it.

This...

The ones saying money > everything are obviously towards the bottom of the financial/professional ladder...that's not a dig, just the truth.

You cannot put a price on "quality of life" This is the very reason I have been turning down a promotion to first line supervision for 3 years. I make six figures now and work 8 hrs. a day, the promotion requires shift work as well on call 24-7 if needed. I am not willing to give up my life for a job. I have also noticed upper management does not snub me due to the fact I have repeatedly declined the offer, if anything they are like schoolgirls and pursue you more. JMHO Good Luck in your decision
