So after 11 years of being here my boss is leaving the company.

He called me into his office this morning to tell me that if I have any interest in filling his position after he's gone, to send my resume to our Regional Supervisor.

I told him I had no interest in that position and that I was happy doing what I'm doing.

Should I apply for it?

It's a considerable amount more than I make now but the headaches far outweigh the rewards of having that position.

Is it frowned upon if the "next in line" doesn't step up like this?

If your not interested, let them come to you. If they come to you use every bit of leverage you have to get the terms you want.

I would imagine so. But I'd talk to your outgoing boss about it a little more. His bosses might think you lack drive if you don't even apply.

Why would u not want to move up, make more money, and be a boss? What are you working for?

Your happiness and sanity outweighs money, but the SO might not think this way.

My company is all about promoting people. If they ask you to apply and you say no, you basically say goodbye to future advancement opportunities.

Absolutely. You'll likely stay in the same position forever unless you switch companies.

I'm already a boss and my department runs smooth as can be.
I only answer to 1 person and have all the freedom in the world that I want. No headaches, no on call 24 hours. And my salary allows me to live more than comfortably

Could you eliminate the headaches if you were in charge?

In my opinion you're doing the right thing. We have a bunch of Peter Principle managers who loathe their job and are hated by their employees because they didn't want the management life but wanted the money that goes with it.

If I were you, The only way I'd apply for it is if you had a good conversation with the person who would be your new boss and let them know that if you decide it's not for you then you want a path out.

dont discount peace of mind and 'freedom'. If his job comes with major headaches that you currently dont have or that you couldnt overcome then you could have all the money in the world but being miserable isnt something you could pay me to be.

You only get one chance to move up. I would take it. Maybe this job sucks. But you'll make more money, and it'll give you a chance to move up to the next position. And I'm sure that next position is a cushy executive job that pays a ton and doesn't have many headaches

Not a chance of that happening when you have to directly answer to refinery personnel in my opinion
