Am I just being a baby about it or does this commercial irritate the hell out of anyone else?

I have been watching the draft for about 20 minutes before going out to do things and this commercial has played twice. A bunch of kids saying "I got plans"...and the worst part is that at the end, those words flash up on the screen. I understand that some of those kids don't know better. But the NFL....really? Are they that retarded or just trying to dumb down their message for the dummies?

Trying to dumb down the message.

This is another annoyance. People need to use proper English.

Proper English evolves.

We speak a different dialect than the mother country, to them we are the ones bastardizing.
I have plans is proper though, got sounds ebonicky.

I gethith what thouth doth say. Perhaps, in the days of yon the langauge was pure. Our forefathers spokeith a proper dictation. The olde ways wane, A shame that parlance can change at all.

People can do whatever they'd like. However, as soon as someone says something like "I got plans to", I can't take the person seriously and I automatically disregard everything else in the conversation.

I didn't see the ad, but I got plans sounds like my fool cousin who had plans to get his GED.

I think he finally got it in an alternative incarceration facility.

Right

Because using one slang word is the difference between a scholar and a street rat

Doesn't make them a street rat, but at the same time no educated person would speak like that or I would seriously question their education. Doesn't matter what race. If you sound stupid, chances are that you are stupid. The quickest way to achieve that is to use improper english. There are plenty of fast food restaurants and grocery stores that need stupid people to make them run.

Interesting theory out there (that a lot of Brits actually agree with) that American English is closer to what the Brits were speaking at the time of colonization and that current British English is the bastardization. Apparently the idea is that the aristocracy began speaking with a pronounced accent to further separate themselves from the commoners and then they were mimicked. Not sure the validity, but anyway...

A pet peeve of mine. Proper english has definately gone to hell. I think it's mostly just "lazy speech". I got is just easier to say than I have. Proper english be damned.

No. Learning and using proper grammar is important. I have personally read some English papers written at BRCC and sometimes you cannot even understand the point that they are trying to make. The problem is they have not heard proper grammar at home and many teachers in school don't use proper grammar also. What comes out of their mouths and pens cannot be easily understood. The NFL should be reinforcing the use of good grammar so that the players, and general public, can get used to hearing what is correct. Why sound stupid and uneducated? What is gained?

The NFL's fan base is very trashy, is this supposed to be surprising?
