That's not saying a lot. I've seen landfills that look cleaner than NO.

Biggest myth about N.O. if anyone cares to really tour the city and observe objectively. First, the French Quarter has to be given a pass . . . primarily because of redneck tourists.

The rest of the city, except in a few shitty areas, is no "dirtier" than other cities of comparable size.

NOLA is a cesspool, you need to go east, period.

For one thing, it doesn't have the sheer quantity of very good, chef owned and operated restaurants.

Oh and Husk was simply named the best new restaurant of 2011.

Charleston is far better than New Orleans in every way. There's hardly anything southern or charming about New Orleans today.

I believe I debunked this statement earlier in my breakdown of the two.

Charleston is lots like a larger and nicer version of Savannah. There's a touristy section but Charleston is much better than Savannah once you get out to where people actually live and work. A similar comparison could be made to NO - the touristy and "nice" areas are good in all three but the overall metro area in Charleston is simply better.

There are much better places to live than any of these but they tend to cost more.

As you should, but now I'm questioning your loyalty to your hometown

Haha.
I love Charleston so far, but I could see it getting old after a while... it's so small. My hometown will forever be my favorite city.

I was actually sipping on a Westbrook White Thai as I wrote that as well. I edited to add Westbrook. They're my second favorite (Coast being first) in Charleston.

Architecture - pretty much the same Food - New Orleans has more to offer. What Charleston offers isn't anything to scoff at. Bars - New Orleans has more. I like the Charleston's bars better though. Shopping - Pretty similar. King Street rivals Magazine Street. Still, New Orleans has more shops though. Culture - New Orleans Entertainment (Festivals and sporting events) - New Orleans blows Charleston away. Education - Charleston for K-12, New Orleans for University Graduate School - New Orleans has more to offer. Cost of Living - New Orleans is cheaper Cleanliness - Charleston Outdoor activities - Charleston Women - Charleston New Orleans is much bigger, therefore it'll offer more.
Never been to Charleston but this seems to be the best, most unbiased post in this thread.

From my own observations, I feel a lot of young people come to Charleston to look to make it their home (excluding the Ohio snowbirds obviously) and then fizzle out after a few years. What they don't realize is that Charleston (not West Ashley, North Charleston, possibly Mt Pleasant for some), but Charleston...the place you are wanting to live in, is pretty freaking expensive. It's also very insular. Locals aren't too keen on outsiders coming in and trying to set up shop. Locals really support other locals businesses. You've got to remember, some of these businesses have been passed down for many generations and no one wants to see them go. People really talk and keep it tight-knit with one another. Believe it or not, locals really do value Murray Boulevard or the South Battery as Park Avenue or 5th Avenue. It's insane. People also don't realize how small Charleston really is. Outside of tourism, hospitality and the Boeing plant in North Charleston isn't really a "booming" and "thriving" place of business.

Yep, limited real estate=higher price. Living on the peninsula is fricking awesome, though. I wouldn't have it any other way

It also doesn't help that sooo many people are trying to find a job and move here.

That's the thing, people just don't realize that we don't have much available. We also don't have huge apartment complexes or downtown high rises with 30 floors of apartments. On that note, tourists always seem to be caught off guard when they are in "downtown Charleston" with the lack of tall buildings or a downtown feel. This is Charleston, not Times Square.

Yeah, that's what I was saying earlier with all of the young people that move here for a year or two and flame out.

ETA: Not too long ago I met a girl from Dallas that was trying to get a job at this antique chandelier and curtains boutique for some time. Well, someone dropped the hint that the owner's daughter, little Dorthy Ann, was graduating from Ole Miss this upcoming spring and was coming back to take the job. The market is just not there for some people.
