You could just say that you prefer Charleston instead of making an asinine statement.

Yea, St. Charles Avenue and Magazine Street could be mistaken for any place in Cleveland or Topeka

That's not saying a lot. I've seen landfills that look cleaner than NO.

Seriously though, you can go to any corner of the country and unless you're speaking to a group who have "never been nowhere", all you have to do is say the words "cool place to visit other than the overwhelming aroma of human urine" and they will all immediately know you're talking about New Orleans.

It depends on what you are looking for and where you are at in life. It's hard to say which is better because they are pretty different in my honest opinion.

What it means is the cities look very similar (compared to anywhere else in the country) but that Charleston doesn't have their seedy areas near their million dollar houses.

And you are talking about the French Quarter here.

I like Charleston better, but NOLA has more of many things Charleston has.

Both have good food, NOLA has more.

Both have interesting bars/shopping, NOLA has more.

Both have great culture, NOLA arguably has more variety.

That said, Charleston has nicer walkable areas, nicer coastal areas, and better people IMO.

But, I wouldn't live in Charleston permanently unless I was loaded or native. Like NOLA, it can be very aristocratic, but unlike NOLA, there aren't a lot of pockets for outsiders to get into. You can live in Charleston and enjoy it, but you're unlikely to become anything of note in that community.

Anyway, they're both fun, but Charleston's overall charm compared to the sometimes brash and over the top nature of NOLA gives Charleston the edge if you're past your mid 20s.

Food? Significant edge to New Orleans which is one of, if not the best food city on Earth.

Safety? Charleston.

Things to do/see - about equal.

I could see myself living in Charleston more easily than in New Orleans - however, to visit - New Orleans has the edge - food and WWII Museum being the deciding factors there.

Architecture - pretty much the same
Food - New Orleans has more to offer. What Charleston offers isn't anything to scoff at.
Bars - New Orleans has more. I like the Charleston's bars better though.
Shopping - Pretty similar. King Street rivals Magazine Street. Still, New Orleans has more shops though.
Culture - New Orleans
Entertainment (Festivals and sporting events) - New Orleans blows Charleston away.
Education - Charleston for K-12, New Orleans for University
Graduate School - New Orleans has more to offer.
Cost of Living - New Orleans is cheaper
Cleanliness - Charleston
Outdoor activities - Charleston
Women - Charleston

New Orleans is much bigger, therefore it'll offer more.

I've never been to Charleston, SC so I can't compare the two but uptown NOLA is pretty damn cool. The houses, the hundred year old stately oaks, the little shops & restaurants, Audubon Park/Tulane, & dangling beads hanging off trees/power lines on St. Charles Ave. Pretty cool sight to see

Unfortunately, most people who've never been to New Orleans believe NOLA=Bourbon

The CBD/Warehouse District areas are only improving. Tons of roads are being resurfaced, buildings are being remodeled with businesses moving in, and new buildings are springing up everywhere. I go every 1-2 months and am pleasantly surprised with the continuing upgrades/plans.

I hope NOLA continues onward with the rebirth of the city & not rest on their recent laurels. Now get rid of the crime

Sorry man.

I'm definately biased (born and raised and CofC undergrad) but Charleston blows any city in the south out of the water due to the proximity to beaches/water, food, girls, and history.

It is very significant. It's on the world stage, Charleston is barely on a regional stage....

Charleston food scene is legit. It is easily top 3 in the South.

I know it's good, I go often, but it's not remotely close to New Orleans. It's good for it's area, it's not good on the international level.

I'm an El Cid Grad and stayed in Charleston a few years after. I feel like I outgrew it.

Employment opportunity sent me to Columbia and I don't regret it at all. A lot of Charleston folks love to hate on Columbia, but it is a great place to raise a family and I am very happy here. Thats for the concern tho

ETA: I go to more USC football and baseball games than to the beach, so it works out.

It's like Baton Rouge. Not a bad place to spend a Saturday in the fall. Other than that...
