Yep and banking on the same thing as a casino giving a free alcohol.
Drunk people irresponsibly spend money and use credit cards.

Let's just up the bac to .13 in the city limits and let people drive a little more buzzed.

I blew a 0.12 on Friday night using tetu's keychain breathalyzer. I was pretty damn drunk. This was after lots of high ABV beers.

Are you saying 0.13 used to be the legal limit?

The demand is just very inconsistent

No, I'm saying it SHOULD BE. I've been an advocate of increasing the BAC and doubling penalties for DWI.
We already have a scaled system. blowing over .16 is worse than blowing .1 for example.

Make it .13 and then nail a drunk fricker to the wall for blowing that or above. Let it be known for months before law change. I think it would be good. But I'm a drunk.

frick man I'm a database guy, you're the cabbie(or fanboy of yellow cab at least).

I'll write the frick out of a program to store, track, trend all the data for uber and yellow cab but someone else has to fix it.

Oh man that'd be nice.

Could we have a DWI-free weekend once a year too, like they do with the sales tax?

Awwwww hellll no. I'd take kids to all-inclusive resort somewhere far from roads.

It's like arguing with a brick wall, if you don't like Uber and hate how they rip people off then don't use it

DON'T USE UBER IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT!!!!!

You should have stayed to shake hands with the opposing team Bo

I wasn't arguing for or against it.

Was simply stating that the poster I was responding to was incorrect.

What is the justification for charging 6 times the normal rate?

Lower the demand. Otherwise you end up with a yellowcab BR situation where nobody can get a cab within an hour.

I paid $80 for an uber this weekend. Totally not worth it, I would walk a couple miles before paying that again.

'scammed' and 'fare' were too much for you, but umlaut usage is right in your wheelhouse?

Then walk next time. Think of it almost like an auction- sometimes a stellar deal, and sometimes you pay a big premium to get something that everyone wants. If you hop on eBay and spend $80 on something you don't want you don't blame ebay. But it's cool to have that marketplace for when you NEED something, or when there's a value to be had and suppliers willing to compete

Yeah I think that with huge masses of people trying to get a ride, Uber is free to charge what they want. High bidder gets the ride. At some point, this will knock down demand and thus prices will drop... or there will be more drivers which will increase supply.

My question: are Uber drivers paid based on a commission structure where they get more money at surge pricing time? Or is it just an hourly rate model? It would make sense that they would make more to encourage more drivers.

I don't know the full model but drivers get more during surges. The raised rate is in part to encourage more drivers to partake during premium times.
