people that give a shite about the job will continue to be productive with no dropoff.

I think the point is that a good, productive employee can get the bulk of his/her work done at home much more efficiently than he/she can at the office. A lazy, shitty employee is going to be just that whether at the office or at home. The days I work from home, I'm usually done with most of my work by lunchtime, but I also get started as soon as the kids leave for school around 6:45, and don't really stop until I'm done. If I'm at the office, I feel obligated to "work" until 5, and I'm not always efficient.

redstick13 - saw the pic you posted. Did they ever determine what happened to your son? I have a son the same age and I think about your son from time to time since you posted your story.

do you think you're going to earn the same salary if you work from home 30 hours/wk?

I do almost exactly that. I told my lead I was planning to move to something remote, so they offered to let me work from home a few days a week. I agreed, and eventually that turned into 100% remote work. I now do the same job, and actually make more, whether I work 10 hours a week or 40.

Remote jobs are as much a benefit for employers as employees. Salaries should reflect that.

It should also blow up stupid business bureaucratic ideas that are well past their prime.

If your business is making you go visit contacts/clients right now, or participate in in person meetings, it's antiquated (most likely). The legacy mindset of "our clients expect us to meet them in person" is particularly stupid in a time like this, as is the idea that people need to be around a conference table to discuss the next meeting wherein 10% of the people there will say anything of business pertinence whatsoever.

We talk about the private sector being better than the government and it is, but there is so much bureaucratic muck in large American business. It's hilarious that even efficiency efforts fall into this category - most often they're buzzword-laden, time-wasting programs that complicate simplistic concepts.

Let's circle back and touch base regarding these new SOPs when you have time.

Hell, I am trying to find a new series right now. Laptop on my lap, trying to figure out how to make money on a big quote, sorting thru a spreadsheet that makes almost no sense.......

Got a conference call webinar deal in a bit, if I get these three things accomplished by 12, I will be available for issues that arise. They will call me at around 4:30, that is when all the problems start.

If you're good at your job, you will. My point is, there are days at the office I have to really hunt for work to do. It's not the norm, and is probably only a few days a month, but it happens. There are days at the office I only do a few hours of actual work because of all the interruptions, unnecessary meetings, water cooler talk, etc. Those days I could be much more efficient working from home, and I'd usually get all that work done by early afternoon. There's a balance somewhere, and that balance is different for each person. But it's easier to just expect employees to be present and/or available 8-5, M-F, regardless of if there is actual work to do.

But what if people didn't have to work?

Don't mistake the obstacle for the cause, an error our friend Bastiat warned us about.

Work is a good thing. Laziness is a bad thing (not to be mistaken for leisureliness).
That does not mean that the current amount of time people spend at their jobs is the best possible situation.

Challenge your assumptions.
