One guy in the group has nasty custody issues with his ex-wife, who still lives in Mississippi. He says it is well known that in Mississippi, you're not getting custody of your kids if you're an atheist. Thus, he keeps any atheist-related stuff off social media. But there is one particular activist type in the group who believes everyone should be "out," so he doesn't respect others' privacy. The activist guy tends to be shunned by a majority of the group. Even atheists don't like overly vocal atheists.

Gluten will give you diarrhea and make you fat at the same time. Most people are too dumb or lazy to know they have a gluten allergy.

You say
quote:

I don't believe in gods

But this is obviously false, because you watch TV. Television is your god. You can claim to be enlightened and free from the burdens of theism, but you're really just like any other Christian, Hindu or Muslim. Because you watch TV.

(I don't watch television)

I'm trying to understand what you mean here.

It's a discussion about atheism right now, so it seems pretty appropriate

It was a discussion about a mildly humorous bar sign.

Now it is about the tv and gluten devil that Atheists worship.

You sit here and claim to be a religious person, but anyone who watches television can't really commit to or believe in God. They waste too much time watching TV.

And the wolves in sheep's clothing who claim to be religious but spit in God's face by watching TV and eating bread. fricking hypocrites.

I'm actually kind of busy, so I don't have the time needed to really delve into this topic like I'd like...but...

The reason you tend to see atheists get riled up is fairly easy to understand if you'd take the time to step back from your own point of view and imagine the world from their perspective...sort of a walk in their shoes sort of thing.

I'm assuming you're a believer, and almost certainly a Christian of some sort. Congrats...you're part of the 75+% of the American public and nearly every elected official that openly declares a faith. Believers in general...those that believe in your god and those that believe in the "wrong" one...make up 90+% of the American public. In short, you are part of the largest single majority of people in the country. Nearly everything that takes place does so in an echo chamber designed to reinforce the belief that your world view is correct. And depending on your part of the country, religion or even a particular faith may be so omnipresent that you may not even notice it because it all agrees with you. It's only when someone suddenly disagrees that there are any waves in the pond...and like clockwork, regardless of how respectful that disagreement might be, it's seen as an assault on faith!!!! You'd surprised at how easy it is to rile up the faithful by just saying you don't agree.

This thread is a great example of that. Religious threads were "banned" on the board...but what that means in reality is that threads that contained too much opposition to religion were getting RA'ed and they needed to go. Pro-religious threads are fine...and you can take swipes at atheists all you want. The minute someone returns serve, suddenly atheists are all loud mouthed and never shut up. It's comical really.

How many threads are started on all boards here that are about religion in general in a positive light versus those that are started by atheists either attempting to bash religion or to say something positive about atheism? The second group just does not exist...

Mostly because tv is easier than reading.

It evolved, with your help. He responded to another post on the topic.

It was relevant to the conversation.

I'm not capable of doing that. I'm not an atheist. I'm a christian who vehemently debates things that contradict my stance, even though I don't believe in them.

I tend to think most people that fall into some sort of "group" tend to dislike those people that fall on the sides of being "activists" or overly vocal.

I realize it sounded like a joke when I said it, but if we did not live in a society completely dominated by faith and specifically Christianity I would never EVER have any reason to even think about my lack of belief in it. I mean...when was the last time any of you Christians felt the need to argue about or even contemplate your lack of belief in the Olympian gods? what if 75+ of the American public and nearly 100% of all elected officials worshiped Zeus? I'm thinking you'd have to address it a bit...

I've never ever walked into any room and declared my atheism. First...because it seems unnecessary to me at it's core. But the real reason is I never say a word about it until I'm almost forced into it. When I talk about it, even on this board, it's a return of serve. It never gets brought up first.

I think the thing that seems funniest to me is the idea that vocal atheists, as rare as they are based strictly on the math of it all, are somehow more often run into than vocal Christians or people of faith in general. The next time an atheist shows up at your door to convert you, it'll be the first...

I don't think it is the disagreement, but rather the method that the argument is too often made. "I don't believe in fairy tales and flying spaghetti monsters, you people are far dumber than I am," is not a very appealing message when referring to others' core beliefs. It is easier to offend someone by assaulting what the believe than it is to offend someone by assaulting what they don't believe. "You are stupid for believing in God," is more offensive than, "You are going to a Hell that you don't believe exists in the first place." But that's just my opinion, and I could be wrong.
