i think you've just successfully made your point that you're not making fun of other people's beliefs.

as an atheist the sign doesnt offend me, its funny. people are too sensitive imo.

I wasn't offended at all. I was kind of just commenting on the back-slapping that was going on about how accurate the sign was, given that unlike the guys agreeing with the sign I actually am an atheist and that doesn't fit me at all.

quote:

i'll share an atheist story: someone i was having lunch with yesterday mentioned their top priorities in life are 1. god 2. fam 3. career, in that order. if i had interjected and mentioned that my priorities are 1. fam 2. career, it wouldve been taken as a personal insult by that someone. but i wasnt asked so i didnt interject. its something i think most atheists can relate to.

All the time. this kind of thing happens ALL the time...you have to decide if you want to move along or get into a fight. Unless prodded into it, I grin and change the subject.

quote:

i personally detest atheists that think theists are dumb. Sir Isaac Newton might be the most brilliant human to ever live and he when he couldnt solve the 3-body problem he said it must be intelligent design. imo theism has nothing to do w/ intelligence. 85% of the world's leading scientists ar atheists, but what about the other 15%? they'd boat race me in a game of chess and have probably forgotten more than i'll ever know and yet they are theists. brians has nothing to do with it and i wish the vocal minority of atheists would shut their piehole.

Agree...addressed this in an earlier post.

quote:

with that being said, its been my experience that when religion comes up in convo i keep my mouth shut, but when asked about religion, i speak my mind and someone always gets offended.

right...because it has nothing to do with HOW you disagree, but the fact that you disagree about something SO important and that disagreement is fairly gigantic. There's no polite way to tell someone that in essence you think they're completely wrong about their entire world world. I have no issue with people being upset with that...just that they then feel the need to pretend that by simply disagreeing you're being an a-hole.

Haha what?

quote:

Mythology

noun
1.
a traditional or legendary story, usually concerning some being or hero or event, with or without a determinable basis of fact or a natural explanation, especially one that is concerned with deities or demigods and explains some practice, rite, or phenomenon of nature.

5.
an unproved or false collective belief that is used to justify a social institution.

A traditional story that has a hero, usually a deity, explains phenomenons of nature and cant be proven.

and an unproven collection of beliefs that justify social institutions.

Im not even making a truth claim. Those are exact definitions.

why would you say that in the first place?

oh yeah, because reading your response 'between the lines' you are smug in your belief that you are right and they are wrong.

You mean like the sign in the OP, right?

I wouldn't...but when pressed into saying I'm not religious and am an atheist, it's what I'm saying without having to. When I say that I'm an atheist and then have to explain what that means (not surprisingly most religious folks have no idea what atheists actually think), people immediately start with, "You must think I'm an idiot!" I'm not labeling anyone...when someone says something like that I automatically know that they've worked the math out in their heads by assuming what their feelings would be towards those who they would run across that believe something which to them would appear as silly as their religious beliefs seem to me.

Case in point.

I've gone out of my way any number of times in this thread, and in countless other threads on here to point out that I do not think religious people on the whole are stupid. I don;t agree with them, because I think they believe a stupid thing.

I guess you could say I love the believer but hate the belief?

I think many non-atheists see atheists as pompous, when they try to act like the guy who knows how the magic trick is done while others continue to gawk. Problem is, at the end of the day they don't know how this all started or where it's headed any more than the theists. They each choose to believe in what they are comfortable with.

ETA: Crossfitters and Vegans are still worse than atheists. Far worse.

In their defense, they were lumped in with Vegans and Crossfitters. I can only imagine what a full-gospel churchgoer would say if they were put in a similar category.

Holy shite, will y'all just flip a coin or something? This was fun until y'all each started writing out manifestos about why the other one talked so much.

Again, that was a comment about atheists in real life, not with anonymity on the Internet.
