Legally, what physical discipline constitutes abuse these days?

My 8-month old son was eating tonight, and he threw some food at his mom and yelled. I found myself thinking that if he were 8 years old and did that, I maybe inclined to give him a swift, appropriately firm,open-handed pop upside the back of his head.
I don't think seeing this in public would have been looked at twice 25-30 years ago, but nowadays, I could be hauled off to jail for all I know. So I got to wondering what is and isn't allowed legally (not morally or socially acceptable) these days.
Whipping? Belts? Kneeling on rice?
I know there are tons of young pussies on here raised in the age of timeouts with their PlayStation growing up, so I fully expect to be told I'm a monster for even asking. That said, I'm looking for someone who can answer the question specifically. Thanks.

A switch. Make him break it off the tree himself, so that he can choose the weapon of his demise. Nothing like a little PTSD growing up

In today's society, I think a stern talking to, is over the line.
Pussies run this country.

Pics of mom so we can determine the severity of this offense.

There are plenty of studies showing that spanking is no more effective than other means of behavior correction. It's also been shown to cause stress and other psychological issues. However, there is a ton of anecdotal evidence to support giving kids a swift kick in this arse to straighten them out.

Didn't read anything but the topic, but I'll go ahead and say this thread is off the trashy meter

frick that, I ain't risking jail time. Just stick to emotional abuse, it's more effective and requires less effort.

he's thinking of the asian tradition of making kids kneel on frozen peas. or holding a heavy book or other object over their head for a certain period of time, and if you drop it, you have have to do it again.
I think asian culture has the right attitude on corporal punishment. They use pain, but without using (and thereby teaching) violence. I'm certainly going to use some of their methods on my kids.

Scare them with your voice when they are 18m or so and you will not need to bring out the big guns. Always leave an option they haven't yet experienced which, as far as they know, is absolutely horrific and should never be brought to bear.
Once you spank then you have shown all your cards and they know everything you have. Better to leave a Trump card in your hand.

I quarterdecked my boys. Only needed to do it a couple times and now they just have to hear me ask "so you boys want to play games?" and they straighten up.

That's some grade A parenting, let me tell ya. If that is OK to do, why not smack the 8 month old. Smack the mom while you're at it.
