If I am meeting someone for the first time yes I do. It goes a long way to gain their respect.

Look, babe, just because you don't like it doesn't mean it can't be used. I mean seriously sugar lumps, why do you get mad when we treat you as less than equal? I'm sorry the world isn't fair, trixie.

don't use these terms but its a common southern hospitality kind of thing. Babe, honey and bubba is a very, very common term thrown around in the South.

Why do people so frequently get on this board and tell a bunch of Southerners about what is common in the South?

My father was born and raised in Louisiana, just like his father, and his father's father, and so on. I've lived most of my life in Texas and Louisiana as well. I've never heard those terms used commonly in a work environment or between people who don't know each other extremely well.

Do you think people in the north are "missing out" on using these words? you get that much satisfaction from saying "honey?"

Yes but mine would be backed up by any HR department.

You mean to tell me that if a woman complained to the corporate offices about being called honey and darling all the time out in the field that she would be told "ah sugar, it's just boys being boys in the South, nothing wrong with it honey"?

I guarantee you are the guy in your office that everyone avoids talking to because you make them uncomfortable and are completely oblivious to it. When you do corner them I bet they are thinking to themselves "I need to find a way out of this conversation."

Fair. A warning though, some people from northern states consider this an insult (stupid, I know).

I would but she's ignoring my sarcastic posts in favor of her side of this argument, sweetie/dahlin.

Know a fairly militant woman lawyer - one day her secretary told me they were having elevator problems in the building. She was mad as hell over the problem.

I called her pretending to be the service rep of Otis Elevator. Changed my voice, and called her "little girl" and "little lady" and finally, when she was really steamed, asked if her husband could come to the phone or if "I could speak to the man in charge."

After I told her what was going on, she didn't forgive me for a month.

I treat nurses with great courtesy, especially if they are going to give me a shot.

My office consist of my secretary and my asst drafter. And they are cool and laid back people I've known for a long time now.

But nice assessment bro.

We actually get a good kick at some of the shite posted on TD.

The right thing to do was apologize and just move on from it. Not a big deal in my view, but to some it may be. Hopefully nothing more comes from it.

There is most definitely a double standard, so just keep your head down and work through it. A couple of years back at my old firm I got a closed fist blindside by an intoxicated female co-worker who had a crush on me when she saw me talking some girl up at a non-work function. I didn't say a word, but she ended up telling the whole office about it. Lots of jokes at my expense: "Jort's clients sure are having a hard time with this recession, but he'll be OK. We all know he can take a hit." I just brushed it off, but want to guess what would have happened if I hit her, even if I intoxicated?
