I work at a dealership...honey would actually get you rewarded for good behavior.

Political correctness gone awry. I can understand someone preferring not to be addressed in that manner but sheesh just politely ask someone not do it.

To be fair, all we have is his side of the story that he said it innocently and that she snapped at him and "got his arse chewed."

A good looking white girl can call me honey any time.

Well to be fair, it's not appropriate in a professional setting.

Really? Then I really feel sorry for you or anyone that works in this kind of environment. It's pretty common in the south, especially in a professional environment in the oilfield. Terms like this are used all the time by men, women, old and young. Nothing sexual or demeaning about using the term "Honey"

I wouldn't get a male coworker fired if they called me "honey" at work but I would def pull him aside and tell him it's not cool.

See this is why I add a pat on the butt to let my female coworkers know that we're being informal and it's all good.

This. It sounds like he OP's "I know Honey" was in response to something that the woman was trying to explain. Might have cut her off just a little so I suspect he came off as condescending.

Just because it's common doesn't mean it's correct.

I'm from the south as well and have worked in office settings before I was a nurse and I can assure you this wasn't normal behavior.

Too many people are thin skinned or waiting for something to happen. A few years ago, I had a co-worker use the term "n***** rig" in front of me. He apologized, it was all cool. Damn, don't all of us have some baggage? I do.

I try to treat women the same as men in my office so as to avoid anything like this. If you wouldn't call a man honey or some other name you shouldn't call a woman the same thing. Pretty good rule of thumb IMO. Use their first name, sir or mam.

If you have even just a little social intelligence, it's not hard to figure out what is appropriate in a work environment.

I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything by not being able to call women I don't know "honey".

That might be fine in the oil field. It's not in a bank, physicians office, law firm, etc. That's where the social intelligence comes in to play.

Very good rule of thumb. Easy to remember and act on

Like I said, I feel bad for you or anyone else then. I don't use these terms but its a common southern hospitality kind of thing. Babe, honey and bubba is a very, very common term thrown around in the South. Nothing sexual or demeaning about those terms. Work with rough necks like I did in college and you would go home crying by what you would hear. It must suck to live in a shell.
