Same reason you go to YOUR bank's ATM not another's.

Bank is close?
Want to make sure the check is good?
Bank is open when yours isn't?

All things you pay for in the $6.

Lots of banks do this now

We've been doing this for over ten years now. Tellers don't work for free. Of course, we only charge non-customers this fee.

If that check bounces it's $35. Some would rather have the peace of mind of it not bouncing and being charged $35. Some don't have that amount in their own account to be used as recourse to cash the check.

So stupid. The banks should be able to check an account at another bank when cashing/depositing a check from another bank.

It's not my reasoning. It's what bank employees are coached to explain to customers that can't fathom being charged for a service where they are not a customer.

Why would banks agree to share customer information with each other?

That would allow them to cherry pick the best customers from the competition.

Not smart.....

"convenience fees" for paying bills with a card

Whoever is accepting your card gets charged by the card issuer, they're mainly just trying to get that back.

Yeah, I know this. I have past banking experience. I also know I could have called and it would have said the funds were available and I put it in my account and 3 days later when it cleared his account the funds may not be there.

And now that risk is on the bank, who also doesn't know what's going to hit the account tonight along with this check, and doesn't know for certain if the item will be disputed by the signer.

It would also eliminate NSF fees and returned item fees. Lose/Lose for both banks.

I haven't been in a bank in a long, long time.

Me neither. And if someone hands me cash, I just hold on to it until I somehow eventually use it all up.

Checks are cashed with my phone. Bill payment and all that jazz online.

The easy way to avoid that fee is to deposit or cash the check at your own bank, or demand another form of payment.
Dead Mike, I am so fricking glad you explained this to us.

You should have just wrote a note that said "Please waive the $6 check cashing fee, or else" and gave it to the teller. They usually give me a little extra $$ when I do that.

It credits its customers account for the amount of the check and presents the check to Iberia Bank for payment through the regular check clearing process.

If there are insufficient funds in the customer's account at Iberia Bank and Iberia Bank returns the check to Chase Bank as NSF, Chase then charges the check back against its customer's account which it had previously credited.

What's your point?
