Ya, I think the love for the Alabama state schools may actually be too strong to convince people that bringing in outside talent to develop the state would lift all boats. Proximity to Atlanta will always be good for them.
People feel like they "own" those schools. I'm trying to pick up the vibe of UT here, but so far, it just isn't the same. It's serious no doubt, but they've bought in on it being an academic institution. Thoughts subject to change.
Plus you have to sell a brand. U of A has a good brand, but it's not anything close to UT outside of football. Alabama is not a well regarded state overall, and you just don't have the natural pipelines to escape the confines of what the state provides.
Auburn has a fine but kind of boring brand, and making a good-but-not-great STEM and Ag school into a national draw is hard. Look at A&M, with a better reputation and tons of money. You see many non-Texas kids lusting over life at A&M?
When I think flagship public schools that really have national appeal, I think Texas, Virginia, Florida, Michigan. From our region, I think the best opportunity to join that group likely come from UNC and UGA.

my girl just started at DePaul law. probably going on to the sturm school at UDenver. i got the hebert center to mail her a pamphlet but she was like "naaaah"
She wanting to live in Denver post school? My advice on law school is generally that 90% are regional schools, so attend where you want to practice. If you kill it, you may be able to get out, but your best bet is to get at least a good local firm job in an in demand field such as healthcare, work 2 years, then hit up a recruiter who can put out a national search.
That 2 to 3 year period is a great lateral hiring point.

unless he's posting under a new name, TulaneTigerFan could turn this thread into a 50 page diatribe convincing anybody that Tulane is the premier institution of the southeast. He got severely butt hurt when Texas was listed higher on US News' list a few years ago.

I agree with all that.
The bible belt states are kind of SOL.

You are asking this on an LSU message board whose majority members have a hatred of all things New Orleans and expect reasonable responses?

I know in your eagerness to preemptively complain that you probably didn't read the thread but the opinions have been more than reasonable.
"Respected but not on Vandy's level" is far from a controversial take on the subject.

most people that go to tulane don't pay full tuition. actually, idk anyone who's gone there that didn't at least have a half tuition scholly.
i'm sure there are rich kids who do,but most people pay around half or less.
That's still a lot more expensive than "free" at LSU.

Ha I doubt I'd know who you are but we have plenty of mutual acquaintances.

Nice. I'll have to visit Shoal Creek then for the IRL.
Not happening for a couple weeks due to weddings. Thankfully one of those weddings moved from the Bama weekend though. So I'll park myself there for sure on that one.
Curious if there will be a melt if we lose again or not

The melt will be reduced since Wisconsin shattered our illusions about this season. But come by, it's a good time.

Yea she's at DePaul rn because she's been in Chicago for four years at Columbia. Wants to move to Colorado after her 3 years.

Gotcha, just checking. Many have grandiose ideas about school at that level and undergrad, and nobody every said any thing to me when I wish they had, so I try to at least mention it when it comes up. Good luck to her
