Emory has a lot more Asians than Tulane which probably is why it's ranked higher. Tulane's still mostly rich kids from up north.

In the Southeast (excluding the state of Texas), I'd try and rank it as...

Duke
Virginia
Vanderbilt
Georgia Tech
Emory
William & Mary
Florida/Georgia/North Carolina
Alabama
Tulane

I may be forgetting a few here and there (Davidson, W&L, etc).

Tulane is not that well thought of with New Orleans, people actually. Most doctors I know dislike their med students—typically using words like entitled, lazy, underprepared, etc. The legal profession likes them well enough, but Loyola tends to hold the old boys club of New Orleans law. Most of my friends didn't consider Tulane for undergrad because of the amount of annoying Northeastern people that make up a huge % of the campus.

ETA: sorry to reply to you, just a general response. My annecdotal 2¢, anyway.

The big state schools in the South were listed: UVA, UNC, UGA, and Florida. However, I've been told that Alabama's academics have skyrocketed. I could be wrong.

Alabama's academics have become extremely overrated by a lot of people.

Try hitting up Goldman Sachs fresh after getting your LSU philosophy degree.

Tulane is the safety school for northeastern rich kids who apply for the ivy league. It is well respected, but there are several others that are more respected, especially for engineering.

Maybe so? I wouldn't know as my kids went to UT, UNC, and Colorado College. I've just heard good things about Alabama recently.

Alabama has done a lot to get their rankings up in recent years. They manipulated (not really using that negatively) USNWR to account for the fact that their average student wasn't spectacular.

For whatever reason, they've slipped this year and are now behind AU (which they were for a long time before the early to mid 2000s) and are tied with Tennessee.

Alabama benefits from getting well to do kids from places like Dallas or Atlanta who can't get into UGA or UT/A&M/SMU, so it definitely outshines a school like Tennessee in prestige. But as for academic reputation, I don't think it belongs on your list.

If you are heading to grad/med/law school and test very well, I agree.

However, the type of job a bachelors from a good school compared to an LSU is not even comparable, outside of specialties here and there like PETE.

Alabama started doing well when Saban started winning championships and they started making sure kids from Alabama stopped going there

I really do think football success has helped. If you're not getting into your local big, football-centric, good greek life U, Alabama is a solid choice.
