I think Sanderson is getting nominated mainly because of his work on WoT.
I think there is a handful of writers who could finish the series well. Though most don't write books with as many main characters as GRRM.

Sanderson is also prolific, which would be a great change from GRRM. Still though his whole thing is sex and gore would not match up with the rest of the series.

Just use a pair of dice to decide the fate of characters the same way he does now.

I don't think gore would be a problem for Sanderson. He does a good job of depicting it in the Stormlight Archive books. I mean the action scenes are pretty graphic and Kaladin's crew literally wears pieces of Parshendi corpses into battle.
And while sexual relationships aren't as explicit in his works I could personally deal with less of it in the Song of Ice and Fire books. Off the top of my head Catelyn, Dany and Cersei all had POV chapters that described cum running down their legs.
Thats not something I'm trying to read more of

Sanderson or Abercrombie

Just make a GRRM hologram and let it do the work

It shouldn't be finished if he doesn't finish it.
Same thing with Robert Jordan and the wheel of time books.
Absolutely couldn't finish the books. They were horribly written. Still smh at not finding out how he wouldve had Rand al Thor go out :/

Large passages of the final book were completed years before RJ died. It was definitely his conclusion.

Queen of Fire, the final book in Anthony Ryan's last trilogy. It is the biggest drop off in quality of books I've ever read in my life. Blood Song (the first book) is brilliant... the second is good... but book three absolutely shat the bed.
Wheel of Time, a very long series began by Robert Jordan and finished by Brandon Sanderson after Jordan's untimely departure. That series is the reason so many people have said Sanderson for finishing ASOIAF.

Robert Jordan wrote the final scenes in the book before he died. He knew how he wanted it to end. Sanderson has said that parts of the final book were written by Jordan, so we know exactly how Jordan wanted to end it.
I am not a Sanderson fan. I didn't like his contribution to WOT and didn't like Mistborn. I don't like his style of writing.
GRRM will absolutely die before finishing the series. Unfortunately, unlike Jordan, he didn't meticulously map out where he wants the story to go and how it will end, so we will never get the ending GRRM would have written. No clue who should replace him to finish the series, but I'm quite certain it should not be Sanderson.

Patrick Rothfuss could definitely write a really good end to the series, but more likely he would take it over... Stall for another decade and keel over himself. fricking still waiting on Doors of Stone.

I didn't like In The Name of the Wind, but that was more for a specific choice he made for a plot twist that I absolutely hated. His writing style is fine.
I begin reading fantasy books as a freshman in high school 20 years ago. But I have not found a new series I like in probably 10 years. I have to think my age has something to do with it. New fantasy cannot capture me like it once did. I far prefer nonfiction now. So as a result, I don't like any fantasy authors that came onto the scene within the last 10 years. If GRRM dies, I'll probably just not finish the series.

Have you tried Blood Song? The final book in the trilogy is really bad, but if you just read Blood Song as a stand alone it is absolutely amazing. Vaelin al Sorna is a very realistic and relatable protagonist, which made the whole thing come together.

His adopted son GRRRRRRRRRRM Jr.

Gotta be Daniel Abraham, who is GRRM's protege.

My favorite new Fantasy book I've read and I read the genre a lot. Next would be Abercrombie's books. Though a lot of that might be the great audio book production of it by Stephen Pacey.
