This!

If it's a bother to let your kids have fun and do what they love and experience competition, travel, etc...whether its sports, music, spelling bees or whatever....dont have children.

We have a deal with my youngest son...we will go and let him compete in whatever as long as he keeps his grades up and he works hard at what he wants to do.

Once he is grown we will start focusing on ourselves again.

Instead they could take their daughter to Italy and stay in a shitty hostel. Now, there's a plan!

Started a thread about not understanding why parents put their kids in travel ball...has a kid in travel ball. WTF? If your daughter gets a soccer scholarship this thread will come full circle. Bump if so.

This thread is not about having kids in travel ball. It’s about dropping $1000’s and spending every spare day, sacrificing family time.
Both my daughters’ travel sports, are about $600 a year each. We would get a hotel once or twice a year. If the tournament fell on a weekend I work, I don’t go. I’m not spending vacation time to see them play/dance.
We enjoy our vacations as a family.

Athletics is generally fools gold for most parents. Most people would be better served sending their kids to computer camp, for example.

If your kid is a great athlete sports can be wonderful, but most parents overestimate their kids abilities.

I hate that American youth sports have gotten to the point where talented kids have largely moved away from organic local leagues.

And for the record, I played AAU basketball and high level (AJGA and similar - talk about expensive) junior golf all through high school, but there’s a lot to be said beyond just sports about playing neighborhood leagues for as long as you can.

I've done it for 3 years now and do enjoy it. It's quality time with my daughter that we would never get if we didnt have sports in common. It's allowed us to travel to places we'd never go if our own choice. We do typically add some days on each end to make a vacation out of it.

It's taught her a sense of hard work, dedication and selflessness she wouldn't get if she was just being a kid. I completely recognize that the money spent could provide for 2 educations.

There's also a sense of pride watching your child excel at something due to a little bit of God given talent and alot of hard work.

To each their own. I’d rather go on family vacations to interesting places than watch a stupid game no one outside the deluded parents of the participants cares about in a shitty town in the middle of nowhere.

And I love the middle of nowhere if not at a stupid baseball/soccer field.

so the example you use is a kid being successful and getting a scholarship to a school.

but what about those travel ballers that don't end up with a scholly? Then what?

So when you go vacation you bring home more than you spent?

I agree, frick travel baseball, but some of this is enjoyable to people just like being stuck at Disney for a week.

Does he have any other kids? Have they been dragged around to ballparks their whole childhood so missy can get a scholarship in a sport that she’ll never earn a paycheck from?

Why do you care how other people spend their money and time?

We have spent thousands of dollars traveling and competing.

We usually spend a few extra days wherever we are going and enjoy doing stuff non competition related.

We have gone to L.A., Denver, Vegas, Phoenix, Indianapolis, Roswell, Alburquerque, Nashville, and all over Texas.....had a blast and loved every minute traveling and seeing the country.

And you would be wrong.

He doesnt play travel ball.

He plays baseball and basketball for the school and competes nationally in karate.

And most of our friends locally arent involved in karate.

As I’m a travel baseball coach, I’ll speak from our side since the unathletic masses don’t get it and I’m sure I’ll be “wrong” in some way shape or form.

Majority of people elect to play travel ball because of competition. I could take my team and let them play in a local YMCA league, win every game 25-0, get no better at the game, hear other unathletic parents kids complain about losing to us, which in return makes the whole thing miserable for everyone.

The people who typically hate on travel ball are the parents who weren’t ever good enough athletically to participate in any sport at a more advanced level. It’s common, and I see it quite often.

spending $8-10k on a hobby like that (when there are other options for drastically less) is insane unless he's making 1% income
