I get it for the competition, coaching, and likemindedness amongst the players and parents.

Recreational youth sports can be a shite show if you get hooked in with the wrong bunch, and poor coaching mixed with team politics can ruin the fun quickly. We have not done travel or club ball but we considered it strongly after a handful of bad experiences playing with a mixed bag of kids from school and their retarded parents.

but what about those travel ballers that don't end up with a scholly? Then what?

I don't think ya'll understand exactly what travel ball has become. A kid doesn't have to be exceptionally talented to play AA baseball. Just slightly above the rec kids who stare at the sky the whole time they are on the field because their parents forced them to play. Also, there is really no need to pay a lot or travel very far.

i mean all the people talking about the side benefits of travel ball can't ignore those benefits are basically in any hobby

so are you implying that there is something other than the (non-scholarship) side benefits?

And btw, my daughter has played travel/competitive soccer the last 5 years. She is really good, but there isn’t money dropped in travel soccer like there is in baseball/softball.

Not true. Ive been all over the country with each of my kids in travel sports (Nationals in soccer; Majors/USSSA/PG in baseball) and soccer is just as expensive as baseball. One year after attending Nationals and Regionals in 2 leagues I stopped counting at $15K.

Maybe his kid just enjoyed it, so he was willing to sacrifice his money and time for the kid to do something they enjoyed and also positively affected their life (scholarship, etc.). Insane logic, but maybe it's possible.

I'd never push my kid and travel ball has gotten absurd, but it's possible they love it and it's not hurting anything. I loved playing ball year round.

Mine stares at the sky the whole time and he asked me to play, lol I never forced him to.
Granted it’s only his second year and now his 1st year of coach pitch. He didn’t start playing till he was 6. We won’t do travel ball but it’s b/c I just can’t get off work that much and don’t have that kind of money. If I did and my son wanted to I would, but unless he wants to work a part time job at 11, and playing travel ball, it ain’t happening.

Seems like he could have saved all that money, stayed home and used it to help pay her college.
And he could have also stopped her from becoming a lesbian.

The benefits for sports and computer camp are different. I don’t care what your kid does with their time but don’t act as is one is better than the other

Of course. Hard work. Setting goals. Team work.

My step-daughter is starting her 3rd and last year of AAU basketball. She plays on a very good Nike affiliate team. We spend around $4000 to $5000 each year. She committed to a P5 school last week, so it worked out for us. The 12 to 15k we spent wouldn’t pay for one semester of tuition, books, room & board where she is going. Plus they pay her $6000 a year in cost of attendance money. I understand mutual funds and there ain’t one out there that will give me that return.

Maybe not in your case, but there are plenty of kids who play rec league who are completely uninterested in the game. They are there because their parents signed them up.

not really

well my response was to somebody mocking coding

and coding is a lot more valuable except in insanely extreme scenarios (and the insanely extreme scenarios in coding > that of sports)

those are the (non-scholarship) side benefits i literally was referencing

At least it’s a sport, and not “dance.”
