That would be 125 and CAT 3 approaching CAT 4.
I dont see the pressure or composition of a CAT 3 or 4..yet.
Hahah I just saw the old EURO and I think its having that fujiwara effect go down from a model perspective.

Excuse my ignorance over the matter, but when PR takes a direct hit, how much of the rescue and recovery is the responsibility of the US Govmt and FEMA?
Probably more than if it hit the continental U.S. because PR govt is broke. Also, a lot of the recovery & relief efforts for St Thomas & St John are being based out of Puerto Rico & to a lesser extent St Croix.
I fear it's about to get a lot worse for the Virgin Islands.

They manage property down on the island and my sisters husband works construction/is deeply involved with the rebuilding process (so ive heard). I dont know why they havnt left yet. Very stubborn at the moment.
Been hard to communicate with them over the last few days, but they have been adamant they are ok and have supplies...

It is incredible how quickly these things can strengthen

As long as they're safe. I feel for them and all of the people that are still there. Those are tough conditions they are living under and it looks like it's about to get worse.
I still haven't been able to communicate with any of my friends in the BVI.

SE eyewall on yours.
NE on slacks. Makes sense.
My fears last night confirmed this morning. Sigh. Two majors blowing through the islands in a month.

Looks like the eye possibly might be uncovering in the last sat frame.

I have several friends who live in Virgin Gorda & Peter Island who aren't rebuilding or returning. The economy is looking like it is shot to hell as most of the global banks, accounting firms, jewelry companies, & international law firms with offices in Tortola aren't returning and are permanently relocating their operations and employees to places like London, Hong Kong, Cayman Islands, St. Croix, St. Kitts, or Panama.
The cruise ships aren't returning anytime soon (min. 2 to 3 years) to Tortola, St. John, or St. Maarten. All of the cruise ship companies have decided to port elsewhere which is crippling to some of these islands.
I see a large migration of the local population to other islands or countries as well because they won't be able to sustain themselves on some of these islands.

961mb with a 31kt wind - surely the pressure is a few mb lower, which is why the NHC went with 959mb.

She's not done RI by any long shot.
Do you have a link for radio wave imagery? I am curious as to the eye wall structure currently.
I dont think any EWRC will save the islands at this point. Maybe PR if it happens. However, she still doesn't have an open eye.
Degree baws, do EWRC still happen in closed eyes?

Nothing of the eye at the moment though.

We got radar baws. Don't need the microwave passes at this point.
Absolutely.
ETA: FWIW it would be better for Maria to not do an eyewall replacement until she's running up on PR. She's a really tight storm right now, max winds don't extend out far. So better to have an intense hurricane with a narrow band of major hurricane impacts than a slightly lower windspeed with a big windfield storm.

Tortola and St. John don't berth cruise ships.

quote:agreed. she's a tiny storm and very minor shifts in track can have huge impacts on any of the islands including PR. Hopefully the 15 miles of hurricane force+ winds can stay offshore to one side or the other. Of course this presumes no EWRC that would cause an expansion of those winds as you say Duke.

Cruise ships have never ported at St. John. They dock at St. Thomas which is the most frequented cruise ship port in the world. They'll be back there and probably a whole lot sooner than you stated.
