The obvious response being that a lot of them have been here a lot longer than you have?

This is Louisiana. Get fricked.

That said, I haven't heard a conversation in French since my grandparents died. It's definitely something that's dying out.

I think it is making a comeback in New Orleans. A lot of private and public schools in New Orleans are offering French Immersion starting from K.

Also, an all French bookstore just opened on Magazine street.

Definitely something we don't do enough of in America. Having traveled and lived abroad, its pretty clear the culprit is 24/7 fast food, wal Mart, etc. I'm teaching myself how to smoke/age meats like my great grandparents did. Hopefully we all wake up soon before we completely lose our identity./quote]

At a baw masterag! That's a damn good place to start. Best thing is to have friends or family that share a passion for it. I've got a few cousins who love French music, beer, and smoking meat all day as much as I do. We'll get together and make/smoke 200-300 lbs of sausage at a time.

I have only heard it in public maybe once in the last 5 years. The majority of fluent people left in Terrebonne parish reside in nursing homes now. It will be a dead language very soon here.

I've never heard an actual French conversation in NO...nothing more than a Cajun French word or 2, or short phrase but not a whole conversation.

Somebody words daily. At doctor's offices, conversations daily. Ville Platte. Both parents speak it. I don't but half arse understand it. It's dying. Kvpi has news in French and show each morning where they speak French. I was shocked when I went to lsu and would use words that I thought were English and folks had no idea what I was talking about

Wow. That's how it's supposed to be. My maw maw decided she would only speak french to me as a child since I was the only gran who lived close, so out of all 14 I'm the only one who can speak. Sucks cause I wish we all did.
