From my observations, the longest marriages involve the cheapest rings. No ring or some bullshite homemade something equals short marriage as well. No way in hell I'd spend two months or even one months income on a ring. Of course, this will vary depending on income. Correct answer is not enough to cause you any financial distress.

I think you should spend under 5k on the engagement ring then upgrade it for her at 10 years if you make it that long and are more financially stable.

This.

When my wife and I got married, we didn't have a pot to piss in. Bought each other a couple of super cheap gold bands and went to the JOP.

Bought 2 engagment rings and another band since, but I've been wearing my original gold band lately. I like the story of where we began and have grown to now. Means a lot more. Going on 14 years now.

If you have a partner who places great emphasis on such things, run!

I bought all the stones and had it built by a jeweler for $6K. If I bought it retail, it would have been around $10K.

Less than 2k no matter your salary.

Also, it's pretty trashy to wear an engagement ring after you are married. Once the engagement has been met, it is only logical to wear a wedding band.

Some women can't let go of the eternal bride image.

In two marriages, I think I've spent a total of $700 on one engagement ring and two wedding rings.

Only the mentally diminished ones do.

They don't understand what engagement means.

I would be pissed if a guy proposed to my daughter with a ring that cost less than $30k. $50k seems reasonable for any professional. If you can't afford a decent ring then you can't afford to be married with kids.

Er, a lot of women have them soldered together.

If they're just wearing the engagement ring for a year or few months, that seems like a ridiculous waste of money.

If you're middle class and spend 50k on a ring, your judgement needs to be questioned.

I spent a little over 1k on engagement ring + wedding band. I initially gave her some cheap shite ring my dead mom bought off QVC, but I couldn't let her "show that off" to people

All in all I'd say it's been good. I wish I had the money to custom design the perfect ring, but I don't, and she didn't care anyway

It's normal to keep wearing it with the wedding ring.

Now many engagement/wedding rings come in a set anyways and are specifically meant to be worn together. As posted above, many women also get theirs soldered together to wear as one(that's what I did). It's really just a personal preference, there is no right or wrong way. If a woman's engagement ring has a thicker band and then add a wedding ring....might be too thick on her finger and that might be a reason why she only wears wedding band? Or....maybe your wife secretly was never a fan of the engagement ring that you picked out so she jumped at an excuse to never wear it again?(that actually is the case for a coworker of mine...she didn't have the heart to tell her husband he picked out a really ugly engagement ring so she just wears the wedding band now...that she made sure to help pick out).
