re: How Many More Centuries Until the Next Step in Human Evolution?

I think it's usually spurred along by either geographic isolation or some type of bottleneck event.

So, unless the former somehow happesns, I'll go with the latter and say that when something comes along that wipes out everyone over 5'8", I'll simply have to step up and do my part to repopulate in the suddenly skewed women to men ratio new world.

Humans don't evolve in the way you described in the OP.

We sort of ride on a series of boats on a gene pool and eventually all the boats will get everyone from one part of the pool to another...but when they get to the other side there wont be much change or there will be a great mixing of genes and still humans as we know of today and past.

You're looking for speciation. And I don't think speciation can happen unless a) a barrier goes up for millenia separating humans or b) society lets one group grow and change different than another.

And neither of those are happening.

I am the next step in human evolution. Just waiting for the optimum time to reveal my being to the remainder of humanity.

Uhhh...it doesn't work like that.

One person doesn't change the species.

Anyone who asks this question seriously (I can't tell if you're joking or not) doesn't have a fricking clue what evolution or natural selection is.

Yeah, what I'm saying is the next step won't be natural. I think the next step will replace natural evolution, and since the technology to do so will be developed long before the nearly millions of years it takes for nature to give us a boost... it just makes sense.

I think we won't see another big jump untilI we start sending colonies to other planets

This - science and medicine are advancing too rapidly for it not to happen like this.

I'd guess .5. This century and the beginning of the next will be the beginning of our evolution into homosuperior. Once we're able to integrate with machines, while our genetic code will technically be the same, we'll for all purposes be a different much more intelligent species that would make Da Vinci and Einstein look like morons (Tesla however may have still been able to compete). Integrating with machines would also make us far stronger as well.

My guess and it's purely a guess, is that the next stage will be (relatively) soon, and it will be genetic and other advanced forms of body/brain/tissue enhancements. There will be a class of the enhanceds, and the enhancednots.

This is probably true in some ways. The people who get enhanced (and especially those who get enhanced early) I think will not give a damn about the rest of the world that is not able to keep up or get integrated with society at the pace they want it to. We'll look at them as merely chimps, and a tragedy that they don't have the potential to keep up with us.

Depends on how you look at it, but I would say a step like that is unlikely.

Not enough isolation. Too much contact between people in every corner of the world for a new species to branch off.

The species itself will evolve together.

We are evolving now. It's more of a gradual process. We are taller and less hairy than even our ancestors of the last few centuries.

More like there is more diversity now, and an argument can be made that the increased diversity are not a result of evolution because these changes and increased diversity are not due to survival of the fittest as none of theses changes confer a survival benefit.

Carson is 100% correct. Evolution occurs through reproduction. The idea is that the stronger beings of a species will reproduce but the weak will not .

fricking morons reproduce way more than humans that should be passing on their genes.

The next step of "human evolution" will be robots/cyborgs/whatever you want to call it. we will become metaphysical.

we will seed the universe with our ideas, not our physical selves.

In terms of major evolutionary changes, I think we're done. There are no evolutionary pressures anymore now that our weak can survive and I don't think we will have a major evolution as long as our tech keeps improving

This. For a man with the great Hitch as his avatar, I'd expect nothing less. Look people, we aren't surviving in the wild anymore, natural selection isn't swaying our breeding for a particular favorable trait. You and I aren't kicking it in the swamps, breeding with the females that can swim better away from gators, better tolerate mosquito bites, who can climb trees better to get away from predators because their fingers are longer, who have keener eye sight during twilight because of some new mutation that arose in our group, yadda yadda yadda.

No we are just sitting on our asses, eating shit, collecting a check, going home and living under roofing, electricity provides the comfort, and well there you go.... we need not to evolve anymore in order to survive

... one day though, I would like to see our conscious be uploaded into a form of robotics or digital "being". That may be classified as evolution
